Cyclists roll into Alton to complete a successful Illinois Great Rivers Ride

More than 240 bikers rolled through the Land of Lincoln during the second annual Illinois Great Rivers Bike Ride, Sept. 10 – 16.  After an enjoyable week riding along Illinois’ scenic waterways, the event concluded with a celebration at the National Great Rivers Museum at Melvin Price Locks and Dam in Alton, where evening activities included dinner, dancing and fireworks along with a visit to the Lewis & Clark State Historic Site in Hartford for era reenactments.  A variety of one-of-a-kind Illinois activities and events entertained riders throughout their 385-mile journey, including a delicious steak dinner at Harpole’s Heartland Lodge, a German festival in historic Quincy, and a ride on the Channel Water Cat Taxi in the Quad Cities.

The ride also generated strong media interest throughout the week, with local broadcast and newspapers covering nearly every stop. Although the ride kicked off in 50 degree weather with steady rain, the bikers were determined to make the most out of the event; many braved the elements and slept in tents.  A total of 220 riders from 20 different states ranging from Alaska to Florida participated in the journey.  IBOT would like to thank Opportunity Returns, the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Roger Carmack and the Western Illinois Tourism Development Office, as well as the many communities along the route for making the second Illinois Great Rivers Ride a huge success.
