Visitors to the Bureau’s Web site can now learn about each of Illinois’ official Seven Wonders through a dedicated microsite with downloadable videos, information on each of the wonders, and bookable 3-Day Getaways featuring both the final wonders and many of the nominees.
The Seven Wonders of Illinois program was launched at the 2007 Illinois Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Chicago in February, when State Travel Director Jan Kostner invited consumers to nominate their favorite Illinois attractions on the Bureau’s Web site. The Bureau received more than 3,700 nominations during February, from which 84 destinations were chosen to compete—12 from each of Illinois’ seven regions. During March, visitors to enjoyillinois.com were invited to vote on their favorite attractions throughout the state. Each week the field was narrowed down, based on votes until only the final seven remained.
The Seven Wonders of Illinois initiative has been extremely successful to date, garnering more than 200 media placements, including national coverage on CBS’ The Early Show and in USA Today. The Seven Wonders of Illinois also spurred IBOT’s exclusive partnership with Roz Varon of WLS-ABC 7 Chicago, the city’s No. 1 news station, who reported on all phases of the program, including extensive feature coverage of the winning attractions. Additionally, the Seven Wonders of Illinois program helped IBOT gain a substantial presence in the online conversation arena with dozens of bloggers discussing their favorites to win.

Illinois trade winds blow through Berlin and Anaheim
Once again, Berlin’s ITB trade show March 7-11 proved a successful initiative for Chicago and Illinois as they enhance their strong presence in the German market. ITB attracts more than 10,000 exhibitors from 180 countries and represents the full spectrum of global tourism including tour operators, booking systems and travel destinations, airlines, hotels, and rental cars. Chicago and Illinois continued their successful partnership with United Airlines in a joint booth, March 7-11. Throughout the show IBOT representatives met with 70 journalists, including more than 45 journalists who attended IBOT's media breakfast reception. Several media familiarization trip opportunities resulted from the meetings, as well as new media contacts which will be used to secure future coverage. On the trade side Chicago and Illinois partners met with more than 30 tour operators to discuss ongoing marketing efforts and new product initiatives.
On the heels of a successful ITB trade show, Chicago and Illinois ramped up for TIA’s International Pow Wow in Anaheim, Calif., with key statewide partners. The annual trade show took place April 21-25, serving as the travel industry's premier international marketplace and the largest generator of Visit USA travel. The Bureau was thrilled to showcase offerings from around the state to the world’s top travel media and tour operators.
Social media: Tips for blogging
Steve Rubel, senior marketing strategist and vice president of Edelman’s Me2Revolution, a division of the company that focuses on emerging forms of media, spoke at the 2007 Governor’s Conference in February and discussed trends and tips for social media outreach. Now that bloggers and social media outlets are an integral part of marketing outreach, Rubel provided basic definitions to help audience members better understand this vast and growing generation of media. Key ideas included:
• |
Blog: Short for Weblog, a blog is an easy-to-update Web page that places the most recent post at the top and all others in reverse chronological order. Many blogs allow readers to leave comments, and bloggers link to each other and Web sites to spread information. |
• |
Consumer Generated Media (CGM): In contrast to paid media (TV, newspapers and radio) CGM is media created by and for consumers. The types of media include, but are not limited to, blogging, reviews, videos, photos, and podcasting. YouTube is an example of CGM (see below). |
| • |
Feeds: A feed is an electronic method of providing frequently updated Web content. RSS (Really Simple Syndication), a type of feed, allows Web sites to broadcast content to others and allows readers to subscribe to specific desired content from their chosen Web sites. |
| • |
Peer-to-peer: A form of communication whereby each participant on a network shares data on an equal basis with every other participant in the network. This form of sharing becomes more powerful as more participants join. See: Napster, Gnutella, LimeWire. Peer-to-peer is also synonymous with word-of-mouth, as in two or more peers having a conversation. |
| • |
Podcast: A multimedia distribution method by which publishers “syndicate” (audio or video) via RSS, which enables subscribers to automatically download episodes as they are published. |
| • |
YouTube: A Web site where individuals worldwide can upload, view, and share video clips. Launched less than two years ago, YouTube is one of the fastest-growing sites on the Web. |
