Archery Tournaments & Festival
Tournaments for men and women in several categories, with targets designed to simulate a variety of hunting situations for archery enthusiasts. An archery festival with archery and outdoor manufacturers showing their newest and latest products, special seminars and presentations, youth programs and bow hunting activities for young and old. It also features a practice range and a chance to watch and meet some of the sport's top professionals. These events will provide bow hunters the opportunity to talk and share experience with fellow archers, learn about the newest equipment and improve shooting skills. Mermet Lake Fish & Wildlife Area off Hwy. 45 in Massac County.
Christmas Home Tours
Visit Historic Golconda and tour 4 homes, a church and the local museum. Christmas in the courtyard begins at 5:30 pm with refreshments and, at 6:00, a live Nativity Scene and caroling around a huge bonfire on the Court House lawn in downtown Golconda, Santa arrives on the fire truck at 6:30.
Christmas Parade - Metropolis
A holiday tradition in Metropolis, the Christmas Parade features bands, floats and Santa Claus. The parade kicks off at 1:30pm downtown. (Rain date: Sunday, Dec. 6th)
Fall Festival - Golconda
Celebrate the fall season with a farmers market, arts and craft vendors and local musical entertainment.
Fort Massac Encampment
This annual reenactment of late-1700s Illinois life on the frontier prairie features blanket traders, merchants, military units, fife and drum corps, and period-style food from more than 20 vendors. The encampment offers military drills, mock battles, along with story telling and children's activities.
Olde Tyme Christmas and Living History
Decorations and period music accompany reenactments of what 18th century life was like at Fort Massac. The park staff and local historical re-enactors will welcome guests to the visitors' center and museum, which will be festively decorated with items based on 17th and 18th century designs. Hot spiced tea will warm visitors as they sample cookies baked in the authentic period bake oven.
This is a shrimp cook-off with fresh Southern Illinois shrimp cooked more ways than you can imagine! Locally grown prawns will be available for purchase. Helicopter, & carriage rides, music & entertainment, beer & wine tent and lots more.
Super Car Show
Cars and trucks are polished to perfection and fill Fort Massac State Park for a popular summer show. Winners are determined in various classes, including Mayor's choice and Superman's Choice.
Metropolis, Home of Superman, holds a celebration the second weekend in June each year celebrating the 'Man of Steel'. A Superman Drama kicks off the weekend of contests, music, food and fun, as well as a comic book & artist show, fan films, street vendors, a carnival, costume contest and a Super Car Show.
See tractors of all shapes, sizes and ages. Held along with a Farmer's Market in downtown Golconda.
Winter Horseback Riding
With all the foliage gone from the trees, winter offers some great views of bluffs and rock formations in the Shawnee National Forest area. Enjoy the beautiful countryside, with no bugs in the cooler weather. Due to milder winters, several Southern Illinois stables offer year round riding, with or without guide service.
