Midwest Wizard of Oz Fest
The Midwest Wizard of Oz Festival has been a long standing tradition began in 1982 when Wizard of Oz store owner, Jean Nelson, came up with the idea to create an Oz-themed festival. Since then it has grown to be one of the biggest festivals in the nation that produced crowds of about 30,000 people each year. This year, for the first time ever, the Midwest Wizard of Oz Festival has been moved to the Chicago Southland area in Tinley Park, Illinois.
The Blue Island Farmers Market, which features a wide variety of fresh foods straight from the garden, starts Monday, July 6th and runs through September 28th. It will go from 3:30 to 6:00 pm at the Metro South Park.
McDonald's Thanksgiving Day Parade
Santa Claus, Ronald McDonald and a cast of thousands bring you the 81st Anniversary of the McDonald's Thanksgiving Parade, marching down State Street on Thanksgiving Day, November 26th. Whether you're moving your feet to the melodic carols of marching bands, gazing skyward at the gigantic inflatable helium balloons making their way down the street, or waving at talented entertainers in decorative floats dispensing holiday cheer, there is fun to be had by all at the biggest holiday parade in Chicago. The McDonald's Thanksgiving Parade is the only parade in the city of Chicago to feature inflatable balloons every year. Started in the times of the Great Depression, the Parade has been lifting the spirits of Chicago and bringing the community together in celebration. Over 400,000 people lines the parade route on State Street.
Fall Hayride and Campfire
October is pumpkin time! Join Lake Katherine for a fall hayride followed by pumpkin painting, treats and songs around the campfire. Registration and payment to be made in person or by mail no later than the Monday before the event. We do not accept telephone registration. $8 per person Program #429.
Winter Holiday Hayride
Our annual holiday hayrides will feature the food, fun and traditions from the pioneers of North America. We'll ride on our decorated hay wagon through the streets of Palos Heights singing Christmas carols then return to the Nature Center to enjoy food, crafts and other activities. Registration and payment to be made in person or by mail no later than the Monday before hayride. $8 per person.
Memory, an exhibit of portraits
Memory is an exhibition of portraits that reflect less the "sitter's" likeness than their psychological state. Works include paintings, colored pencil drawings, prints and pastels by Judith Roth, Ellen Holtzblatt, John Smolko and Joseph Taylor.

A River Through History - The Des Plaines Valley Rendezvous
A River Through History is a living history reenactment of early American life at Columbia Woods Forest Preserve, as it was on the Illinois frontier prior to 1848, with emphasis on our local history from the fur trade era to the canal era. An exciting, entertaining and educational experience for all ages. We strive to create a better understanding and appreciation of our history by allowing the public and the reenactors to mingle, both as witnesses and participants, in our event. Finally, we seek to have the most authentic and highest quality reenactors and trade goods to represent our vision of the rendezvous to promote and enhance the historic, recreational and economic development of this new style National Park.

The gallery includes a unique collection of oils, watercolors, pastels, graphite and colored pencil, prints, photographs, sculptures, pottery, and miniatures.
Black Harvest Film Festival
From August 8 through September 3, the Gene Siskel Film Center invites Chicago to celebrate the 21st edition of the “Black Harvest Film Festival,” exploring the stories, images, heritage, and history of the black experience in the U.S. and around the world through film and video. Talent is the key word in describing “Black Harvest:” an abundant manifestation of creativity representing emerging filmmakers and established masters alike. “Black Harvest” most especially promotes dialogue, and we feature many personal appearances for audience discussion.
