Organizers have planned a one-day tour in and around Union and Jackson counties. Transportation, lunch and commemorative t-shirt are provided as part of the tour. The fall tour will commence at the Shawnee College Annex in Anna, Illinois at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2016. The Fall Ozark Tour coincides with National Public Lands day. The tour will visit Shawnee National Forest sites including the Kaolin pond area where the clay for the famous Kirkpatrick pottery was obtained; Pomona Natural Bridge, one of the largest Natural Bridges in the Midwest; and the Lincoln-Douglas debate site at the old Union County fairgrounds all with interpretation by U.S. Forest Service personnel.
A KR is a 2-seat composite home built aircraft, and is named KR after the names of the first builders. Each year enthusiasts, builders, and pilots travel to the KR Gathering to exchange ideas, to learn more about the KR, talk to pilots and other builders, take pictures to assist in the building process and to see friends from past gatherings.

Dozens of hummingbirds should be present to "wow" the observers. After the birds are captured and banded (through special permits), visitors may wish to adopt one (for a $5 donation to the Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders, sponsor of the event) and have the privilege of releasing it back to the wild. Those who adopt birds will receive an attractive signed certificate and will be notified if their bird is ever recaptured. Held at the Trail of Tears State Forest pavilion, Jonesboro, 9:00 am to noon. There is no charge for the event.
Saturday August 13 Come and Enjoy Free Live Music in the heart of Carbondale! The festival will be held on Grand Ave between Wall St and Washington St. There will be a variety of musical performances along with food and beer vendors. The 103rd annual Carterville Free Fair will include a Twilight 5K Run/Walk hosted by the Carterville Chamber of Commerce. Sponsored by the Carterville Lions Club, the fair will be Sept. 8 through Sept. 10 at Cannon Park Midway off Greenbriar Road. This annual Christmas celebration encompasses the entire downtown area of Carterville. Santa and his helpers will be on hand for photos. There will be hot chocolate and cookies, caroling, chili supper, gingerbread contest, festival of trees, Sugar Plum Dance Fairies, face painting, Candy Land Path, horse and carriage rides and much much more. Crab Orchard is home to six nesting pairs of resident bald eagles and their offspring. A few nesting sites are visible from public roads throughout the Refuge and eagles are spotted daily. Guided tours visit eagle nests and areas of the Refuge where eagles may be spotted. The cost is $5 for adults and $2.50 for youth under the age of 12. Reservations are required.
Fly With The Eagles Half Marathon is organized by the River to River Runners Club and is the club's first race on the calendar each year, coming in the late winter season for a cold-weather half marathon that takes runners along the roads and trails of the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge.
Crappie USA will hold one of its fishing Super Tournaments on Lake of Egypt in Marion, IL. This will be a guaranteed payout of $10,000 and prizes to winners. The tournament starts at 6:30am and will run until 3pm with a weigh-in at 4pm.
