The cabin’s historic interpreters will discuss the ever-changing Christmas traditions during Abraham Lincoln’s time and how the Greek bishop St. Nicholas came to be known as Santa Claus, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Meanwhile, the Visitor’s Center will offer music, snacks and family-friendly activities.
You are cordially invited to the Hegeler family’s annual Christmas party. Step back in time to 1887 and be whisked away by the staff as you peek into the family’s and guests’ party preparations. Then, experience the fun of the party with carols, stories, and more. Guests at this event will tour the Mansion and will be guided through a play by one of our maids, meeting the Hegeler family and friends as the story unfolds. Actors in period dress in each room will give you a glimpse into the holidays as celebrated during Victorian times. The halls are festively decorated for the occasion. This theatrical tour is different every year and features local stars from Stage 212, Engle Lane, IVCC, and local high schools. This event always sells out quickly and is a fun annual tradition.
Tour-goers will be the first to see the transformation of the former First Baptist Church sanctuary into an opulent great hall decorated in the tradition of Downton Abbey, the famous PBS series. Guests will enjoy complimentary sparkling cider as they explore the hall, now a new event center. They will be invited to pose for selfies with life-size cut-outs of Lady Mary and other favorites from the TV show. Six private homes decorated in the Downton-style will be open to the public. Other attractions will be Christmas markets, a cookie walk and live Downton music. All tour-goers are eligible for prize drawings for Downton collectibles.

The Weber House is decorated in a style reminiscent of a prosperous 18th century home. As was the custom, decorations are homemade from greens, pine cones, fruits, flowers and assorted sweets. The Christmas trees, although common today, are not historically accurate. They did not come on the scene until Queen Victoria. And then they were small table top trees. So come on in and see Christmas of long ago.

The oldest surviving capitol building in Illinois is putting on its best holiday duds and throwing the doors open to the public. Visitors to the Vandalia Statehouse State Historic Site will find the building illuminated by more than 250 candles and trimmed with decorations appropriate to the 1840s, when a young Abraham Lincoln served there. Decorations include fresh greenery and fruits.
The Mount Carroll Chamber of Commerce presents “A Collectible Christmas”. A variety of antique & otherwise collectibles will be featured throughout participating businesses and in the homes featured on the tour of homes. The tour of homes will run from 10am – 4pm and the tickets can be purchased at Market Street Commons located at the corner of Market & Main Streets in the heart of downtown Mt Carroll. At 4pm there will be music & snacks at the courtyard bandstand following by the lighting of the Christmas Tree at 5pm. 2016 marks the 29th year of our annual Dickens in Dundee event to kick off the Christmas season. We invite all area residents to come out and join in the fun! Dickens in Dundee was formed in 1988. It began as a small community gathering, with caroling and the search for Tiny Tim's crutch in local stores. With the financial support of local businesses and the Villages of East Dundee and West Dundee, it has grown into a weekend holiday festival which attracts people from all over the Dundee area. Cantigny Park’s popular LEGO® Train Show is a holiday tradition for many families. The show transforms the entire Cantigny Visitors Center into a virtual wonderland for LEGO® fans. Le Jardin, the Visitor Center’s restaurant and banquet room, is home to the primary LEGO® diorama where creative new elements are added each year. Secondary displays and a free craft activity occupy the building’s main gallery area and meeting room.

The Garfield Park Conservatory, considered the largest indoor conservatory of its kind in the country, showcases vibrant and festive flora with its annual holiday flower show. This year's exhibit, titled Sky Forest, evokes a walk through delicate wintry woods by highlighting snow-topped branches and towering fir trees. The annual Holiday Festival of Lights has become a Stateline family tradition, with over 50 holiday-themed lighted displays. Santa will be spending time each weekend night (Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays) by the donation box from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, so you can hand deliver your letters to him through Monday, December 19, 2016. When Santa is not present at this location you may still drop your letter in the North Pole Express mailbox, which will be located by the Festival of Lights donation box. Don't forget a return address so Santa can reply! Admission is free; donations are accepted.

PNC Winterfest, Peoria’s newest holiday tradition is back and bigger than before! This 2nd annual event gives central Illinois the chance to enjoy outdoor ice skating on the corner of Fulton Street and Jefferson Avenue! Bring your own skates or rent them from the skate shack. The skate shack carries skates from size 9 in juniors through 13 adults. Spectators can watch the action from a heated tent with seating and refreshments. PNC Winterfest will also feature Peoria’s only ice slide, a 100ft long, 6ft wide slide made of ice! Slide down on a disc, fun for all ages!

Away in the Basement takes us back to 1959 and the day of the Sunday School Christmas Program. In the midst of holiday preparations, the ladies are creating their own memories from Christmases past and present. As the children rehearse up in the sanctuary, several of the ladies of the kitchen are finishing up the treat bags while the others put the final touches on the nativity pieces. Mending old bathrobe costumes and discussing who’s going to play the various roles, little do the ladies know what surprises are in store for them. Known for their hilarious antics and subtle charm, they are once again called upon to step in and save the day!

The Museum is decked out for the holidays; the trees have twinkle lights, Sam is dressed up, and of course the tree competition! During the month of December the Museum gets dressed up for the holidays. The Festival of Trees features a display of over 20 trees decorated by businesses and non-profit groups.The public can vote for their favorite tree by making a donation in jars in the lobby. The Midwest Museum of Natural History also has ‘special events’ happening weekly all December long!

From the infinite treasury of Ireland's cultural heritage comes Tomáseen Foley's A Celtic Christmas - a recreation of a night before Christmas in a remote farmhouse in the west of Ireland in the 1940s. Neighbors gather around the fireside for a night of traditional Irish music, song, dance and storytelling from native Irish storyteller, Tomáseen Foley. There is magic in the air when the neighbors knock sparks off the flagstone floors with their dancing and the rafters sing with fiery traditional music. For the first time this holiday season, Santa’s Magical Trolley Express will have trolley rides through downtown Evanston, and then travel back to Santa’s North Pole workshop at Little Beans Café. The odyssey begins when the little ones board the trolley. They will be greeted by Mrs. Claus and the conductor, professional performers who know how to entertain kids, and build excitement as they journey north on their polar trek. Upon arrival at Santa’s North Pole abode—Little Beans Café—they will visit with old St. Nick, get a picture and let Santa know what they hope to find under the tree. Next comes cookies and cocoa with Mrs. Claus, some exciting Yuletide games with the elves and a special surprise.

The Nutcracker sets the stage for what has become a glamorous, magical holiday tradition for local audiences. Our production is presented each December with a live orchestra, the famed CU Symphony Orchestra, in the elegant Krannert Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Illinois. Local children are cast in roles as mice, soldiers and Polichenelles, while company dancers perform the Waltz of the Snowflakes and Flowers, variations of international delights, and the magnificent Pas de Deux that richly defines the Tchaikovsky score.
