These two-hour guided shuttle tours will stop at some of the sites that were part of the Underground Railroad system including the Old Rock House, Rocky Fork Church and more. Alton’s riverfront location along the Mighty Mississippi played a vital role in helping slaves make connections to the freedom of the northern states. UL International Crown at the Merit Club
The UL International is coming to the Merit Club in Lake County. The golfing competition will take place over four days with 32 players from 8 different countries. It will feature three days of four-ball competition and one day of singles matches on Sunday. Two Brothers Summer Festival
The Two Brothers Summer Festival is a growing, weekend long music, food and beer festival focused on charity and community. The idea stems from the ideologies of the Ebel brothers, owners of the Two Brothers Brewing Company. Two Brothers Summer Festival was created to raise money and awareness for a growing list of charities, as well as give back to the local and regional community. Two Brothers Brewing Company is proud to have granted several wishes via the Make-A-Wish Foundation and helped a number of other children’s charities in its 18 years. This year The Two Brothers Brewing Company will donate net proceeds from the festival to Make a Wish Illinois and local charities. Try your hand at the Litchfield TriathLou at Lake Lou Yaeger. Swimming in Lake Lou Yaeger is the best open water swim you will have in the Midwest. There really is no comparison to this large beach with pristine flat racing water. The bike course is flat and fast with some great curves to keep you entertained the whole ride. Both the 5k and 10k runs see very honest mile paces with plenty of flats, and a couple hills throughout. Sprint and Olympic distances are available.

Created by the genius company behind Broadway's and London's War Horse, Stravinsky's immortal Firebird takes on a new life in this visionary puppet interpretation in its Midwest debut.
STORYTelling: Hmong American Voices Exhibit
This collaborative exhibit explores what it means to be Hmong American. How has Hmong life changed since refugees first entered the U.S. in the 1970s? What does it mean to be Hmong American today? Through objects, audio recordings and personal stories of Hmong Americans, this exhibit immerses visitors in the material culture and social issues of Hmong American communities. The exhibition is now open and will run through December 2016. A special opening reception featuring refreshments and live music will be held 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the museum, located in Cole Hall on the NIU campus. The event is free and open to the public. The Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Starved Rock Walkers Club
Join the fun on our weekly, guided hikes! Explore Starved Rock State Park, Matthiessen State Park, the I & M Canal and a nearby Nature Preserve. Every Thursday morning, year round, the Starved Rock Walkers Club meets in the lobby of the Lodge and departs at 9:00 am. Hikes last between 2 and 3 hours, depending on the destination. The hikes vary each week and over a 4-month period, the group will see the entire park. Make some new friends and learn about wildlife, wildflowers and more. This event is free and open to the public. Please note: We will not hike on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve. Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Every Thursday (year round).
Starved Rock Photography Club
Whether you are just beginning in photography, are an advanced amateur or a professional, you are welcome to the Starved Rock Photography Club. Monthly photography walks at Starved Rock State Park’s Lodge with club leader, Jacki Pienta. The Photography Club will meet each month throughout the year for guided walks to planned sites for photography opportunities. Members will informally exchange ideas and tips for quality nature and wildlife photos. We will meet the 4th Saturday of every month at 9am in the back of the Large Parking Lot at Starved Rock Lodge. All meetings will consist of a hike to an area of either Starved Rock State Park, Matthiessen State Park or Buffalo Rock. Starved Rock Country Marathon
Inaugural marathon and half marathon in central Illinois. Be one of the first people to run through and around Starved Rock Country. The course will encompass the scenery of the Illinois River and the rolling landscapes in and around Starved Rock State Park. Runners will experience a course that is not a flat fast course as other courses advertise, the course has characteristics that will inspire you with scenic beauty and experience the highs and lows of the hills created by the Illinois River thousands of years ago. Star Party at Afton Forest Preserve
The Northwest Suburban Astronomers (NSA), in cooperation with the DeKalb County Forest Preserve District, will be hosting a public star party at the Afton Forest Preserve (north entrance) in DeKalb County, Illinois. Look at stars, galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters with the help of NSA member telescopes. Observing highlights may include Jupiter, nebula M97 (Owl Nebula), galaxy M51 (Whirlpool Galaxy), and globular cluster M13 (Hercules Cluster) among others.
Stained Glass Retreat
Join us for a beginner stained glass retreat and learn the art of stained glass from an Alton Legend. Artist and owner of Alton Stained Glass Works, Lynne Ulett, will be guiding beginners through glass cutting, grinding, foiling, and soldering. Work at your won pace to complete a unique stained glass window or light catcher to take home as a memory of your stay at Pere Marquette Lodge.
