The acclaimed Irish ensemble, Danu, brings the music, dance and storytelling traditions of an Irish Christmas to Fermilab with 'Feile na Nollag' (A Christmas Gathering). Christmas in Ireland is one of the most important holidays for families and friends, as many Irish people living abroad come home to gather in celebration. Local community choirs singing traditional songs for Christmas and Wrens Day are a common sight throughout Ireland each December. Music and dance gatherings, in communities both urban and rural, have often combined for generations to offer a great variety of songs, music, and stories for the holidays.
The event is family friendly and involves a haunted 45 minute walk through the historic downtown. At about a half a dozen locations you'll stop for a few minutes to meet some characters from Long Grove's past. Some of their tales seem to jive pretty closely with real history, but other parts seem like they're lavishly embellished. Required donation of $5/adult and $3/child. Created by Sylvia Milo, the monodrama is set in a stunning 18-foot dress (and based on facts, stories and lines pulled directly from the Mozart family's humorous and heartbreaking letters. With the opulent beauty of the dress and hair design, the sweet smell of perfume, and the clouds of dusting powder rising from the stage, the performance creates a multi-sensual experience and transports the audience into a world of outsized beauty and delight -- but also of overwhelming restrictions and prejudice. Exhilarating, lynchpin works from the repertoire, Beethoven's String Quartet Op. 74 "Harp: and Ravel's String Quartet in F major are put in dynamic conversation with Ben Hjertmann's rowdy, groove-based String Quartet No. 2, "Étude." DakhaBrakha is a quartet from Kiev, Ukraine. Reflecting fundamental elements of sound and soul, Ukrainian "ethno chaos" band DakhaBrakha creates a world of unexpected new music. DakhaBrakha was created in 2004 at the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art "DAKH" by the avant-garde theatre director - Vladyslav Troitskyi - and given the name that means "give/take" in the old Ukrainian language.
