Glidden Homestead Patent Day Celebration!
Joseph F. Glidden was granted a patent on November 24, 1874 for "The Winner," what became one of the most-widely used types of barbed wire in the nation. It all began on the Glidden farm, at the time “a mile west of the City of DeKalb.” Joseph began searching for a better fencing method after his wife, Lucinda, complained about livestock getting into the yard. During this fun-filled event for all ages, you can meet live crocodilians, including Bubba the world famous American Alligator who will be on hand until 2pm. The expert staff and members of the Chicago Herpetological Society and the Madison Area Herpetological Society will give short talks about crocodiles and their kin, while also providing some close up encounters with a variety of reptiles. There will also be kid-friendly activities, face painting a story teller, craft vendors, the WDC’s Wildside Store, food and refreshments.

Starved Rock Photography Club
Whether you are just beginning in photography, are an advanced amateur or a professional, you are welcome to the Starved Rock Photography Club. Monthly photography walks at Starved Rock State Park's Lodge with club leader, Jacki Pienta. The Photography Club will meet each month throughout the year for guided walks to planned sites for photography opportunities. Members will informally exchange ideas and tips for quality nature and wildlife photos. They will meet the 4th Saturday of every month at 9am in the back of the Large Parking lot at Starved Rock Lodge. All meetings will consist of a hike to an area of either Starved Rock State Park, Matthiessen State Park, or Buffalo Rock. Des Plaines River Trail Marathon Races
Welcome to year five of the Des Plaines River Trail Half-Marathon, Marathon and 50 Mile Ultra Marathon along the beautiful and fast Des Plaines River Trail. This is a truly special running course. The DPR Trail is a wide, crushed gravel track, free of roots and rocks, and very flat. All of the major road crossings are managed by way of bridges or viaducts This is a great track through alternating lush forests and open wetlands. With cool temperatures expected, and given the flat terrain and ideal running surface, you'll find these to be extremely fast courses. Grand Detour Arts Festival
The 66th Grand Detour Arts Festival will be at the John Deere Historic Site. Two-and three-dimensional art is shown and offered for sale to the public at this juried fine arts event. A discounted admission fee of $2 is charged for entry to both the site and the arts festival. Enjoy the quality artwork by Midwest, watch the blacksmith at work and learn how John Deere invented the plow. Food stands on site as well as performances by area musicians.

Come out to Greene County this September 6 and 7 and see history come to life! The James J. Eldred House will be open and there will be live period music, food vendors, guest speakers, as well as a Civil War encampment., vendors, and demonstrations and much more! Carrollton will have live music, crafts, baked goods and demonstrations on the courthouse lawn. The Historical Society will have artisan demonstrations along with arts and crafts. Eldred hosts the Baptist Church salad luncheon. Rockbridge, Hillview, Haypress, Roodhouse and White Hall will also be serving up great food and entertainment!
Start the Christmas season off right, head downtown to the City of Effingham and Central Business District's Small Town Christmas and Christmas tree lighting event! Santa will arrive downtown around 4:00 p.m. to officially light the "City of Effingham" Christmas tree on the Courthouse square lawn. Be downtown to see Santa arrive with all of his elves and make sure you get in line to give him your Christmas list! There will also be Christmas Carolers serenading you with songs throughout the event, along with other goodies. Step back in time and take a ride on a horse drawn carriage through the downtown area. Bring the whole family downtown to kick off the holiday season right!
