The Amazing Race – Starved Rock Style
Spend an exciting day solving devious clues each step of the way and getting to know the Starved Rock Lodge area a little more. Try to be the first to uncover the Legend of Starved Rock. Use your wits, energy and sense of adventure as you race against time and your fellow racers. Enjoy a post-race awards ceremony at the finish line. The Amazing Race is fantastic for families, but children under the age of 8 and guests with limited mobility may find this event too strenuous. Teams are of 2-4 people and at least one person must have a valid drivers license and their own transportation as there is driving involved. Check in for the race will be at 11:15 a.m in the Starved Rock Lodge Lobby. Race start time is 11:30 a.m. $50.00 per couple. 2015 Dates for Amazing Race are: May 17 June 14 & 28 July 12 & 26 August 16 & 30 September 13 & 20.
The Warrior Dash in Channahon, IL is the world's largest running series. Held on challenging and rugged terrain, people come from all over to participate in feats of courage and strength; like sprinting over fire, trudging through mud and scaling at least 12 obstacles during this fierce 5K. From couch potatoes to novice runners to extreme athletes, Warrior Dash truly is an event for all athletic abilities.
Take a Hike & a Lunch - Starved Rock Canyons
Join us for a guided hike from the Lodge to LaSalle and Tonti Canyons. Participants meet in the hotel main lobby of the Lodge to pick up a lunch and a “Starved Rock” backpack. Hikers will stop for lunch once they reach a Canyon. The tour concludes at the Lodge about 2:00pm. Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear. Hike will be around 4.5 miles round trip. This hike is classified as strenuous. Lunch includes: your choice of turkey, ham or PB&J, bag of chips, homemade granola bar, piece of fruit and a bottle of water. Advanced reservations are required as space is limited. For more information or to book, call 815-220-7386 Saturday hikes will go to LaSalle Canyon. Depart from Lodge and hikers will stop for lunch once they reach LaSalle Canyon. After lunch, the hike continues to Eagle Cliff and Lover’s Leap. The tour concludes at the Lodge around 2:30 pm. Sunday hikes will go to St. Louis Canyon. The hike will depart from the Lodge and go to the top of Starved Rock then hike to Aurora Canyon. After Aurora Canyon, hikers will go to St. Louis Canyon and stop for lunch. After lunch, the hike continues back to the Lodge and ends around 2:30 pm. Saturday & Sundays through November, 11am-2pm. $17 per person.
Tour de Shawnee Bike ride
Bicyclists meet at the Olive Branch Community Center at 8 AM. Organized bike routes of 15, 30, 45, 62 and 100 mile rides around scenic Horseshoe Lake and area. Entry fee includes: Event bag, chance for attendance prizes. Early registration includes commemorative t shirt.
Starved Rock Photography Club
Whether you are just beginning in photography, are an advanced amateur or a professional, you are welcome to the Starved Rock Photography Club. Monthly photography walks at Starved Rock State Park’s Lodge with club leader, Jacki Pienta. The Photography Club will meet each month throughout the year for guided walks to planned sites for photography opportunities. Members will informally exchange ideas and tips for quality nature and wildlife photos. We will meet the 4th Saturday of every month at 9am in the back of the Large Parking Lot at Starved Rock Lodge. All meetings will consist of a hike to an area of either Starved Rock State Park, Matthiessen State Park or Buffalo Rock. Please be prepared to carpool if necessary. $25.00 annual fee to join which will include a club t-shirt and an annual cookout! Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm 4th Saturday of each month. Get Lit New Year's Eve Fun Run
Now in it's 13th year, Get Lit is a fun way to "run" in the new year! Open to men, women and children, this event is a non-competitive run/walk on a two-mile paved course through the Folepi's Winter Wonderland drive-through display.
Mid-American Canoe and Kayak Race
Famously fun times! This historic, amateur canoe/kayak race is for paddlers of all ages and abilities, featuring 11 canoe divisions, 8 kayak divisions and 1 open (non-competitive) division. From the ultra-competitive to young families and newbies just wanting to enjoy a memorable paddling experience – it’s all here!
Join the 5th annual Fort2Base Race. There are two event distances, 10 Nautical Mile or 3 Nautical Mile events (11.5 miles or 3.45 miles). The 10NM event begins at Fort Sheridan in Highland Park, runs along the North Shore Trail and finishes within the confines of Naval Station Great Lakes. The 3NM event is run solely within Naval Station Great Lakes. All registered participants receive a tech shirt and finishers medals. Runners and walkers welcome!
Abe’s Trail Trek
Trail run consists of a 5k, 10k and 15k run on trails through Lincoln's New Salem. In addition to the terrain of the 5k course, the 10k and 15k courses will take you past an 1800's reproduction flatboat, grist mill, up and down more than 150 steps, past a pioneer cemetery and on to the Finish Line at the museum.
Mudderella is a 5-7 mile long obstacle course event series targeted toward women. With 12-15 obstacles, Mudderella courses are designed to test strength and stamina. There's also a special Muddy Munchkins mini-course for little kids.
Waterfall & Canyon Tour
Experience the fun of outdoors adventure at Starved Rock State Park with a guided walk to 3 spectacular waterfalls and canyons. We will plan to visit French, St. Louis and Ottawa Canyons. The tour will also include hot lunch in Elements Dining Room and a relaxing trolley ride. The 11:00am tour begins with lunch in our dining room followed by the tour and the 9:00am tour will begin with the tour and conclude with lunch. This is a walking tour and not recommended for individuals with limited mobility. Waterfalls cannot be guaranteed on this tour. Fly with the Eagles Half Marathon
Fly With The Eagles Half Marathon is organized by the River to River Runners Club and is the club's first race on the calendar each year, coming in the late winter season for a cold-weather half marathon that takes runners along the roads and trails of the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge.

Starved Rock State Park Canyons Kayak Tour
If you have been to this wonderful state park you know how beautiful it is - consistently rated #1 in Illinois. This trip involves kayaking for approx. 3 hours -back into LaSalle canyon and Hennepin canyon. The views from the water are amazing! 11:00am - 2:00pm.
Have you ever wanted to hike all the canyons in the park? Well now you can do it in one day. Hikes leave the Lodge at 8:30a.m. & 9:00a.m. both days. Expected time for lunch is 1:00 & 2:00. Finish times are approximately 4:30 & 5:00p.m. You will board a trolley with a pair of guides and be taken to the east end of the park where you will begin your trek. Weekly nature education programs for all ages. Each week a guest presenter will introduce participants to a new nature topic. Topics include bees, geology, insects, snakes, butterflies and more! This is a great opportunity to learn something new about the world around us. Every Wednesday at 3pm.
United Warriors Xtreme Race
The United Warriors Xtreme Race is a 5K run with 14 extreme obstacles thrown into the mix to provide a rigorous yet fun challenge for all of you thrill seekers out there! Can you handle the sandpit craw, balance beams, hanging tires, dark tunnels, hay bale jumps, rope walk, tire run, mud pit and more?
Sprint : 1/4 mile swim, 13 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. Out and back on the bike and run. A few rolling hills on the bike, but the run is completely flat. Designed for experienced triathletes and beginning participants. Triathlon includes a 300 meter swim, 6 mile bike course (helmets required), and a 3 mile run. This event is good for getting in shape for more ambitious triathlons. There are no age group awards, everyone who finishes is a winner. This three day adventure will be approximately 35 miles total. You can purchase each day individually, 3 day package $120.00, or as an overnight package $320.00 single and $440.00 double occupancy. At this park we also will see the buffalo that call it home. Enjoy a late dinner cookout before traveling to the Illinois Michigan Canal for a 5 mile evening hike. Be sure to bring a flashlight. Day 2 Starved Rock 8:30a.m.- 8:30p.m. $55.00 Begin your 13.4 mile day with our trolley taking you to the furthest East point in Starved Rock. You will hike and see 12 canyons before lunch and visit 6 after lunch. In the evening a well deserved dinner will await you in our Dining Room. Following dinner, at Fox Ridge we will gather to reflect upon the day?s adventure around the firepit, maybe even enjoy a roasted marshmallow or two. Day 3 Matthiessen 8:30a.m. -3:00p.m. $45.00 Start the day with the trolley taking you to Matthiessen State Park where you will traverse through many unusual and beautiful rock formations, consisting of a upper and lower dells area where waterfalls can often be enjoyed. Lunch will be approximately ½ way. After completing about 13 miles the trolley will return you back to Starved Rock.
Starved Rock Walkers Club
Join the fun on our weekly, guided hikes! Explore Starved Rock State Park, Matthiessen State Park, the I & M Canal and a nearby Nature Preserve. Every Thursday morning, year round, the Starved Rock Walkers Club meets in the lobby of the Lodge and departs at 9:00 am. Hikes last between 2 and 3 hours, depending on the destination. The hikes vary each week and over a 4-month period, the group will see the entire park. Make some new friends and learn about wildlife, wildflowers and more. This event is free and open to the public. Please note: We will not hike on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve. Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Every Thursday (year round).

The 4 Rivers Kayak Tour takes in the I&M Canal, Dupage, Des Plaines and Illinois rivers. People join the scenic kayak tours as an alternate fitness activity, an alternate social activity and to learn about nature/kayaking. If you have never kayaked before, try the guided tour. This is a great way to informally introduce you to the sport of kayaking. Held May 17th & June 28.
