Meet the Comic Book Heroes of Illinois

We all grew up following the adventures of our favorite comic book heroes. But did you ever wonder where they sprang to life? And where do they make their homes when they're not on the job? The answer to both: right here in Illinois.

Calling All Crimestoppers to Woodstock, Illinois!
Law abiding citizens! You are called to the Dick Tracy Museum in Woodstock, Illinois. This hero's cartoonist creator drew the Dick Tracy comic strip from his rural Woodstock studio from 1936 to 1977, never once missing a deadline. The museum built in his honor holds original artwork and memorabilia, and the Crimestopper Club Room lets boys and girls experiment hands-on with everything from forensic science to drawing techniques. Naturally, yellow fedoras are available in the gift shop.

Compare Forearms With the Popeye Statue of Chester
Our favorite muscle-armed sailorman was first drawn in Chester, IL in 1929. It's said that many of the strip's surrounding characters were based on local Chester residents, forever to be immortalized in comic lore. Today, Chester celebrates its hometown hero with a bronze Popeye statue at the foot of the Chester bridge. And this September at the annual Popeye Picnic, the town will unveil its brand new Wimpy statue! Come celebrate with us. No official word on the menu yet, but we're guessing spinach will be served.

Life is Super in Metropolis
Welcome to Metropolis, the hometown of one of our most beloved superheroes. In the town square, a 15-foot-tall bronze statue of the hometown hero watches over the citizens of Metropolis. Right across the street, the sprawling Super Museum displays over 20,000 items—the largest collection in the world. Metropolis is a charming town full of pride for its hometown hero. Pop in for a visit this summer. Shiny blue tights optional.

Grab a Vine and Swing Into Oak Park
In his fictional tales, our future ape man was born an orphan in the wild African jungle. In reality, he was born of the imagination of an author living in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park. It was there in 1912 that Tarzan of the Apes, the first novel of what would become an empire, was written. Today, the Historical Society of Oak Park and River Forest has a permanent exhibit honoring the author and the legend he inspired. Swing in to see it on your next visit to this charming town.
