Lewis & Clark's Illinois Journey
The Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803-06 is among the most important explorations of unknown territory in United States history. The almost three-year journey, undertaken by more than 30 members, the "Corps of Discovery," remains a most intriguing episode of first encounters between diverse cultures, the gaining of new scientific knowledge, determination and perseverance in the face of adversity, and the accomplishment of a very difficult mission by an American military unit.
Our nation commemorates the Bicentennial of the many facets and events of this epic story of the Lewis and Clark Expedition during the years 2003-06, from coast to coast. This observance captures the interest and participation of millions of people all over the world perhaps even more than the 1976 Bicentennial of our nation's founding.
As the place where the Corps of Discovery launched their westward journey, Illinois plays a key role in the Lewis and Clark story. When you visit Southwest and Southern Illinois you are tracing the footsteps of where it all began.
