Celebrate the legacy of Abraham Lincoln

Illinois is honored to claim Abraham Lincoln as its own, proudly declaring the state as the Land of Lincoln. The esteemed U.S. president spent 30 years in Central Illinois, beginning with his young adulthood in the log cabin village of New Salem. Lincoln built his political career in the Prairie State, engaging in spirited debates at sites throughout Illinois. Admired for his quick wit, warm manner and forward-thinking ideals, Lincoln was elected to the Illinois Legislature in 1835. When he was voted the 16th president of the United States and left for the White House, Illinois remained close to Lincoln's heart. It was here at the Old State Capitol in Springfield that he would return to lie in state after his assassination. And it is at Springfield's Oak Ridge Cemetery that the beloved president and his family were buried in the monumental Lincoln Tomb. At the dazzling new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, opening in mid-April in downtown Springfield, you can vividly experience the life and times of this legendary leader. No doubt your visit to the museum will inspire you to plan your own tour of historic Lincoln sites in Illinois. The Looking for Lincoln Heritage Coalition can help, with suggested trips and tours that will point you in the direction of some of the most fascinating Lincoln sites in central Illinois.
