The park is named for Potter Palmer (1826–1902), a successful businessman and real estate investor concerned with the development of Chicago. Palmer was responsible for reclaiming the acres of swampland north of the city's business district, which were developed into the Lake Shore Drive area. He built the original baseball field for the Cubs' predecessor, the Chicago White Stockings, and built the Palmer House Hotel. Palmer Park was created in 1904 by the South Park Commission. Under the guidance of superintendent J. Frank Foster, the commission opened ten new neighborhood parks, including Palmer Park, in an effort to create breathing space and recreational areas in the city's crowded tenement districts. These parks were built by Olmsted Brothers landscape architects and D.H. Burnham and Co. architects.

Scripps Park Golf Course was originally built as a 9-hole course in 1923. The original 9 has many rolling fairways with bunkered greens and challenging water hazards. In 2002 the course expanded to 18 holes with the back 9 having the open feeling of a "links style" course. The wide fairways and creative hazards complement the demanding greens. All 18 holes are irrigated and provide consistent play from early spring to late fall. The course is long enough to be enjoyably challenging but easily accessible to walkers as well as cart players. You can purchase annual individual or family passes or pay by the round. Cart rental and a well stocked pro shop is available. The course can also accommodate groups and corporate outings.

We also carry Michigan peaches, pears, nectarines and other in season fruit from the Midwest. We are a working family operated farm. We want you to have a day on the farm experience when you stop by during the summer or the fall. Our tractor/sand box play areas are available all during the season. Our own animals are always here for you to visit, but we do bring in more during the fall season. In the fall we have our family grown pumpkins, gourds, corn shocks, Indian corn and other specialty decorations. An area of natural beauty, the arboretum stretches along a three-quarter mile segment of McCormick Boulevard on a narrow, 23-acre strip of reclaimed land that follows the diagonal course of the North Shore Channel.
