The Byron Museum of History and Lucius Read House are part of the Byron Museum District. Since its organization in the early 1990s, the Museum strives to preserve Byron’s rich local and area history.
The Byron Museum of History features local history and permanent exhibits including: Into the Outhouse; Old Time Farming; Byron’s Railroad Era; A.G. Spalding: professional baseball player and famous sporting goods manufacturing founder who was born in Byron; Lucius Read and the Underground Railroad, and a wide variety of revolving exhibits.
The Lucius Read house was one of the first brick structures built in Byron in the early 1840s and quickly became a focal point of activity in the young community. Information indicates that the Read family was active in the abolitionist movement and that they provided a safe haven for runaway slaves being smuggled north through the Underground Railroad. One of the permanent exhibits contains historic photograph and stories about the original residents of this 19th century brick structure.
