Lincoln Highway Interpretive Mural -- Genoa

Information

The Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition has produced thirty five Interpretive Murals along the Illinois Lincoln Highway National Scenic Byway and its corridor in northern Illinois.

The Genoa mural depicts another aspect of the growing “Good Roads Movement”. Road dragging contests – “sleds” hitched to a team of horses and dragged along the road, packing and smoothing the road surface, were held as part of a campaign to improve Illinois Highways. As transportation developed, communities like Genoa, that had once been linked to major markets by railroads began to realize the need for a good hard road system. The Lincoln Highway was needed to travel to other communities for goods, services and entertainment.
