Annual Abe’s River Race
Abe’s Canoe Race is a celebration on the beautiful Sangamon River that led a young Abraham Lincoln to settle in New Salem and, of course, the rest is history. This event features a 19 mile canoe/kayak race for the serious competitors along with a gentle float for adults and families on a shorter course. This is a great way to see the river that is largely undeveloped and unchanged. Following the race, you’ll want to take in the fun at Riverbank Lodge for the Awards Ceremony, fresh grilled food, live music and drinks. Enjoy summer fun in the sun in beautiful Petersburg, Illinois, just two miles north of Lincoln’s New Salem.
