Live Bald Eagle at TreeHouse Wildlife Center
There will be live bald eagles on display every weekend in January and February at the TreeHouse Wildlife Center. Free admission. Donations are appreciated.
Playing with Poetry a Winter Writer Retreat
Find your voice as a poet, refine your writing skills, and hear some great poetry! Share a few poems of your own! Whether you already love poetry or simply want to enrich your storytelling performances and/or deepen your non-fiction essays with stronger imagery, this weekend will be a restive and recharging retreat! Spend a rich weekend with a dozen other writers in a supportive and nurturing environment. The third annual Writer’s Retreat, sponsored by The Twinflower Inn, will provide a balance of instruction, coaching, and quiet time to write. If you wish to learn more about building a better essay or structuring your story with clearer metaphorical language, adding poetry to your performances and participating in constructive conversations, then make reservations right away as we tend to fill all of our slots. Folks are encouraged to attend the entire weekend; locals are invited to attend the full schedule Saturday or attend one or two classes. All are welcome. Costs: $125 for the full weekend if you register and pay before December 31, 2015 ($145 after). Price includes workshops and most meals. Three nights’ lodging is available at The Twinflower Inn: single occupancy $150; double occupancy $75.
Illinois Department of Natural Resources staff will offer an informative presentation about bald eagles, the fish they eat, the native fish, the wildlife and the history of the Grafton area. The program will include a short video presentation. Spotting scopes will be available before, between and after programs to provide live eagle viewing. In addition, a live eagle will be on display from Noon to 3 p.m. from the World Bird Sanctuary. Photos can be take for a small donation.
Maple Syrup Time
For 4 weekends in February and early March, you're invited to walk with us into the Garden's sugar bush as we tap our maples. Help us collect the sap as it flows from the trees and cook it down to pure maple syrup. A great way to shake the winter blues!
First Night Evanston
A great Evanston New Year's Eve celebration that brings together a great community! Experience an incredible range of music, dance, poetry and more from some of the world's finest artists. It's a family-friendly event too, featuring an afternoon of exciting musical and variety performances geared to young children as well as a teenage battle of the bands and a teen improv performance in the evening. Performance venues include some fantastic acoustical spaces in some of Evanston's greatest old classic houses of worship. $20 in advance; $25 until 12/31; $30 at door. Type: Festival/Special Events. Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition
As many as 70,000 visitors view these massive works of snow art each year. Teams from around the state will compete in Rockford for the right to represent Illinois in the 2017 U.S. Nationals Snow Sculpting Competition, and high school teams from the Rockford area will compete in the high school division the same week. The public is encouraged to cast their vote for the People's Choice award between 8:30am and 11:00am on January 23. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony at 1:00pm in the Sinnissippi Park Maintenance Building. Sinnissippi Park is open to the public for sculpture viewing while weather permits. Viewing hours are daily from sunrise until 10:30pm. You may drive or walk through the park. Visitors are encouraged to take the time to walk through to maximize their experience and allow them to view the sculptures from all sides. Limited parking is available at Sinnissippi Park. Additional parking is available at Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens just west of Sinnissippi Park across N. Second Street.

Shopping doesn’t get much sweeter than this! The Chocolate Walk will begin at Blumen Gardens at 5pm. You will receive a Chocolate Walk guide listing all participating businesses. Stop at each location and get your card signed when you taste a chocolaty treat. Be sure to make as many stops on the walk as you can – when your card is full – drop your card off with your name and phone number into the bag at your final location. The winner will be drawn from the names of those entered that made the most stops on the walk. We are featuring several wonderful raffle baskets this year.

Eagle Watching Open House
Visit Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge to learn about bald eagles and how to watch for them, then venture out to watch for eagles with a refuge ranger. Experienced eagle watchers will be set up with viewing scopes at various locations at the wildlife refuge. Kids crafts will be available at the visitor center. Eagle Watching with Ranger
Join refuge rangers from Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge for a morning of eagle watching. Visit multiple areas at the wildlife refuge that are known for eagles. A personal vehicle will be needed. Attendees are reminded to dress for the weather. Open to all ages. Space is limited, call 618-883-2524 to register in advance. This program will be on December 5th & 19th, January 2nd & 16th, February 6th & 20th, and March 5th & 19th at 9 am to 10 am each day.
Let's Wine About Winter!
Have a great time in downtown Libertyville. It is a store-to-store wine tasting event, strolling throughout downtown historic Libertyville with different refreshments in each store. There will also be artists in some of the stores. Purchase a wine glass at a distribution site. Then spend a leisurely afternoon browsing the shops of downtown Libertyville while sampling wines offered by participating merchants.
