Memorial Day Service
An elaborate service, consists of the National Anthem, Pledge of Allegiance, lowering of the flag, Invocation, Civil War Re-enactors, guest speakers, laying of the wreath, benediction, rifle and canon salute and taps.
Darrell Shemwell's Bar-B-Que was chosen "Best BBQ on the Old River Road" by Money magazine and was featured in the June 2003 issue of Chicago Magazine. Shemwell's is open 7 days a week from 8 am to 8 pm. Specialties on the menu are BBQ pork, beef brisket, ham, and turkey and are sliced, not chopped like other BBQ. Darrell also makes his own delicious BBQ sauce to enhance the hickory flavor of his scrumptious meat.

The present church is the original structure, built in 1860. Dedicated in 1861 as Evangelical Lutheran St. Paul's Church, it features a 50-ft.-tall steeple, pews made of native yellow poplar, and balconies that span the full length of the building on both sides of the stairway.

It's at the southernmost point of Cairo at Fort Defiance Park, where US 51 and US 60 split across the Ohio and Mississippi rivers.

Stinson Memorial Library
The library was named for Civil War veteran Robert B. Stinson, who left his estate for the establishment of a library. The building was the work of Walter B. Griffin, who designed it in a Frank Lloyd Wright style.
Union County State Fish & Wildlife Area
This area currently winters nearly 100,000 of the 850,000 Canadian geese that spend the cold-weather months in Illinois. Numerous shallow sloughs and other water areas are scattered throughout its 6,202 acres.
