Hometown Teams - Smithsonian's Traveling Exhibit
Cobden was one of six Illinois sites chosen for Hometown Teams, the Smithsonian’s newest traveling exhibit. The exhibit seeks to use sports to reflect the trials and triumphs of the American experience that have shaped the country’s national character. All levels of sports will be covered, from professional match-ups to pick-up games on the local playground. The exhibition is national in theme and local in scope, with each site interpreting the exhibit to share their local history and sports heritage. One of the many unique stories that will be showcased is the legendary 1964 run to the state basketball championship final by Cobden High School’s famous Appleknockers. The Illinois Humanities Council will bring the exhibit to the Union County Museum w/Union County Historical & Genealogy Society from March 1 - April 14.
The Birding Blitz is an event held where teams compete to see and hear the most species of birds in a 24-hour period, while raising money for conservation in southernmost Illinois. Teams can search for birds throughout the area. Get in on the Ultimate Illinois Birding Challenge!
Archery Tournaments & Festival

White Crane Canoe and Pirogue Rentals
White Crane Canoe and Pirogue Rentals offers guided services and watercraft rentals for use on the Cache River. Spend an afternoon gazing upon the mysteries of the swamp including 500 to 1,200 year old cypress & tupelo trees and get lost in another time as you paddle through Illinois’s hidden bayou. From about 800 AD to 1500 AD it was the ‘capital' of a chiefdom that stretched from Brookport to Hamletsburg along the Ohio River. Large flat-topped mounds were erected on which the houses and temples of civil and religious elite stood. Today, the mounds still exist and a constructed overlook platform and interpretive panels tell the story of the significant contribution and historical value of this Native American culture.
U.S. Marshals - Mermet Springs
In this flick, the U.S. Marshal character from The Fugitive is on the hunt for a wanted man after he escapes from a prisoner transport plane during a spectacular crash. This action thriller filmed extensively in Southern Illinois, including along the Ohio River near Metropolis and in rural Vienna. The Boeing 727 used in the crash scene is now submerged in Mermet Springs, a spring-fed quarry where you can scuba dive and actually swim through the plane.

Ferne Clyffe State Park
The lush vegetation of the 2,430-acre Ferne Clyffe State Park, located near the small town of Goreville, IL hides the fact that directly below the soil, a vast area of rock formations exists. The two main areas for rock climbing include Big Rocky Hollow and the Cedar Bluff areas. Cedar Bluff offers both traditional and sport climbing, including several short, but difficult, routes in the class 12 to 13 range that appeal to experienced climbers. Other routes include top-rope access and solid anchors that appeal to new climbers.

Eagle Watching - Union County Refuge
The Union County Refuge in Union offers a popular spot for bald eagle watching. Visitors can view bald eagles and take wildlife photography off the main road, which runs down the middle of the wildlife refuge. Park rangers will be available weekdays to answer questions about the eagles and other wildlife spotted in the refuge. Admission is free.
