Annual Gus Macker Three on Three Basketball Tournament
Gus Macker teams up with nostalgia, history in Morris, IL, 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. This will be the 13th year of Gus Macker 3-on-3 in Morris, IL, which is a nostalgic slice of America nestled along the 96-mile I and M Canal that connects the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River. Gus likes to think the I and M mean Incredible Macker site, though it really means Illinois and Michigan Canal. In essence, both are true. It is a tremendous and welcoming stop along the historic canal, as well as an incredible Macker site. Abraham Lincoln reportedly received a haircut during a visit to Morris, but that's just a footnote or maybe headnote in the history of the nostalgic downtown atmosphere that greets Macker players each year. Registration is right on the Grunday County Courthouse lawn. The courts branch out from there on city streets named for great competition, and all together it presents a basketball festival for gamily and friends. Come on over on June 7 and 8. Morris is located just a little over an hour's drive from downtown Chicago, a lot closer from all the suburbs and that's a short trip to find fun, beautiful parks, quaint shops and wonderful restaurants. Oh, and basketball. A dunk contest, 3-point shooting contest, free-throw contest and a Dream Court for those young dreamers are annual parts of the fun brought to you by the Morris Downtown Development Partnership, Inc., as well as gracious sponsor partners. All age groups and levels of experience are welcome. Just put 111 East Washington in your GPS application. Hey, you could probably get a haircut like Honest Abe. He was tall, and we figure he probably played center or power forward. Registration will be available soon at www.macker.com. Even if you don't play basketball, you can be involved!

LaSalle County Historical Society Heritage Center
The LaSalle County Historical Society’s museum lies on the north side of the historic Illinois and Michigan Canal, itself a historical landmark. The museum building, erected in 1848 during the presidency of Zachary Taylor, is a beautifully restored sandstone building that was originally a granary and warehouse. The two-story building has walls of sandstone blocks between 18 and 32 inches thick, quarried in Utica, and secured with hydraulic cement of the same kind used in the construction of the I&M Canal. James Clark, the man who commissioned the building, came to Utica in 1833, where he became a land squatter. In 1842 he became a contractor on the I&M Canal and in 1845 he bought the local cement mill. He made it a huge commercial success by selling the cement to the canal contractors and the general public. The cement was used in many parts of the canal.
