Dinner and a Little History: Domestic Servants in the 19th Century
Having live-in domestic servants seems like the height of luxury today, but in the 19th century, "hired girls" were common in middle-class households in Illinois. In a society without electricity and running water, household chores were onerous, and in the nineteenth century, a wave of immigrants made labor cheap and plentiful. In domestic servant situations, working class men and women lived and worked side by side with their employers yet were considered second class citizens, often leading to tense relationships. Who were these individuals? What were their employers' experiences living and working intimately with a cross section of society that they might never have encountered otherwise? How did the nature of domestic service evolve as the century progressed? Speaker: Erika Holst of Springfield is brought to us as an Illinois Humanities Council road Scholar. She is the curator of collections oat the Springfield Art Association of Edwards Place. Brought to you by Canal Corridor Association.

LaSalle County Historical Society Grand Opening of Heritage Center
On Sunday, April 26, the LaSalle County Historical Society will celebrate the grand opening of the Heritage Center, the newest addition to its museum campus. The celebration is set for 2 - 4 pm, at the Heritage Center, located at 208 Canal Street in Utica. In keeping with its tradition of preserving and procuring LaSalle County's rich history, the Historical Society purchased the old Utica Co-Op property in August 2012. The Co-op building was fully remodeled and brought up to code transforming it into today's Heritage Center. The Heritage Center reflects the building's original splendor, including a fully restored tin ceiling, with modern touches that will allow for enhanced display space and improved storage for society artifacts, expanded programming, and a location available for rental for community events. Visitors to the Heritage Center will enjoy never-seen-before artifacts and historical displays, many in storage for years but virtually unseen until now. The public is invited to this event, and light refreshments will be served. The grand opening will officially celebrate the preservation of this historic building as well as its addition to the campus of the LaSalle County Historical Society. The LaSalle County Historical Society appreciates the generosity of both time and financial contributions made by loyal volunteers and supporters that made this possible.

LaSalle County Historical Society Heritage Center
The LaSalle County Historical Society’s museum lies on the north side of the historic Illinois and Michigan Canal, itself a historical landmark. The museum building, erected in 1848 during the presidency of Zachary Taylor, is a beautifully restored sandstone building that was originally a granary and warehouse. The two-story building has walls of sandstone blocks between 18 and 32 inches thick, quarried in Utica, and secured with hydraulic cement of the same kind used in the construction of the I&M Canal. James Clark, the man who commissioned the building, came to Utica in 1833, where he became a land squatter. In 1842 he became a contractor on the I&M Canal and in 1845 he bought the local cement mill. He made it a huge commercial success by selling the cement to the canal contractors and the general public. The cement was used in many parts of the canal.
