The Forge Brewhouse
The Forge Brewhouse is using the old traditions of "Rheinheitsgebot," the German Beer Purity Law of 1516 that only allows beer to contain barley, water and hops, to brew signature beers in house. It's pushing beyond those traditions to make a corn beer to honor one of DeKalb County's specialties, IPAs with jalepenos, and many other varieties. The Forge Brewhouse is also creating Brick Oven wood-fired farm to table pizzas.

Route 66 Kiwanis Art Fair
The inaugural Route 66 Kiwanis Art Fair in Romeoville, Illinois, on Aug. 22 will include a tribute to late Route 66 artist Bob Waldmire, and also will have a musical tribute to singer Nat King Cole, who popularized Bobby Troup’s song “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66." The fair will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Edward Hospital Athletic and Event Center in Romeoville, and features live music, a children’s tent, food booths and giveaways. Proceeds will fund charities and scholarships for area youth programs.
Mazon Creek Fossil Tour
Take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn about the environment, ecosystems, and climate of Northern Illinois as it was 300 million years ago by collecting fossil specimens at the Mazon Fossil Beds. The adventure begins with a hayride to the original site of the discoveries along the Mazon Creek as it was in the mid-1800s and the opportunity to collect the unique concretions such as ferns and horsetails. Bring a bucket, rock hammer, shoes to wear in the creek, and casual clothing. Everyone will have specimens to take home to remember the day. Lockport Summer Fireworks Show
On Friday, July 3rd at dusk, (not July 4th), the City of Lockport and the Lockport Township Park District will sponsor the summer Fireworks Show. This free event will start at dusk in Dellwood Park (18th & Lawrence). Learn how to read what an animal is doing – and thinking – from their tracks alone. Discover how and why tracking goes way beyond footprints. Know why people get lost in the woods and how not to yourself. Tracking changes not only what you see, but also opens whole new worlds of how you look at the wild! Easter Seals 5K Run/Walk for the Kids
Pull out your running shoes because Easter Seals of LaSalle and Bureau Counties' annual 5K Run/Walk for the Kids will kick off during Ottawa's Riverfest festivities, Saturday Aug. 1. The 5K Run/Walk for the Kids starts and ends at Ottawa Township High School, 211 East Main St., Ottawa. Check in and race day registration begins at 6:30 a.m., runners start at 8:00 a.m. The run/walk follows a USA Track and Field certified course, winding through the historic east side of Ottawa including the scenic Illinois and Michigan Canal passage. 99% of all money raised at this event remains local, helping local children to achieve their maximum potential. Pre-registration is open now on line at www.runsignup.com. The registration fee is $25 until July 24 and $30 after. Easter Seals will be offering a new shorter race just for for kids immediately following the 5K awards at Ottawa High School. The race is $10 and each child that participates will receive a t-shirt and prize.

DeKalb County Farm Stroll
The Illinois Extension office for Boon, DeKalb and Ogle Counties is hosting a DeKalb County Farm Stroll on Sunday, July 19th from 11 am - 5 pm. Wondering where to find local food & farm products in DeKalb County? Satisfy your local food cravings and curiosities on the DeKalb County Farm Stroll! A free self-guided tour of more than a dozen diversified family farms. Some of the farms participating are: Jonamac Orchard, Waterman Winery & Vineyards, Heatherhope Farm, You Pick Berries and Honey Hill Orchard. Each location will have different events going on, but the stroll will allow participants to meet local farmers, get farm tours and demonstrations, sampling of fresh local products, and more. There is no starting location for the stroll, guests are welcome to visit as many or as few as they would like and in whatever order they would like.
