In a new Halloween event called Night of 1,000 Jack-o’-Lanterns, more than 1,000 hand-carved pumpkins—some as large as 150 pounds—will light up the night at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Replacing HallowFest, Night of 1,000 Jack-o’-Lanterns is the only event of its kind in the Chicago area. The LED-lit jack-o’-lanterns will be staged along a festive, paved pathway, starting at the Esplanade. Along the way, encounter entertaining characters, view the ghostly trains in the Model Railroad Garden: Landmarks of America, and find seasonal light food and drink, such as apple doughnuts, cider, and ale, for sale.

Six Flags Great America will be open for an extra bonus weekend this year for those who want to take on the thrill rides one more time before the park closes for the season. Away in the Basement takes us back to 1959 and the day of the Sunday School Christmas Program. In the midst of holiday preparations, the ladies are creating their own memories from Christmases past and present. As the children rehearse up in the sanctuary, several of the ladies of the kitchen are finishing up the treat bags while the others put the final touches on the nativity pieces. Mending old bathrobe costumes and discussing who’s going to play the various roles, little do the ladies know what surprises are in store for them. Known for their hilarious antics and subtle charm, they are once again called upon to step in and save the day!

The Stage Coach Players Theatre presents "The Game's Afoot". The show takes place in December 1936 and surrounds real-life Broadway star William Gillette, known for his iconic leading role in the play Sherlock Holmes. Gillette has invited his fellow cast-members to his Connecticut castle for a Christmas holiday weekend. Festivities don’t go as planned. This play is directed and adapted by Amanda Smothers. Showing on the following dates and times: Oct. 20-22, 28-29 @ 7:30pm; Oct. 23, 30 @ 2:00pm.
On Thursday, November 17, the public is invited to the Ellwood House Museum for the new lecture series titled “Local Lore.” Local Lore is an adult lecture series which will cover a wide variety of topics relating to DeKalb history. Each month, a different guest speaker will present these fascinating programs. All lectures take place at the Ellwood House Museum Visitor Center, 509 North First Street in DeKalb. From Christmas trees to Santa Claus, Christmas as we know it is a result of the Victorian era. Just in time for the opening of the decorated Ellwood Mansion, this lecture will explore how our Christmas traditions became popular.
