Visit the James J. Eldred House, completed in 1861, and step back in time to view one of the most elegant residential structures in the region and an important surviving example of Greek Revival architecture. The home had fallen into disrepair over the years, but with the creation of The Illinois Valley Cultural Heritage Association, the Eldred House has come back to life and is being painstakingly restored. The home is open for tours during the annual Greene County Days celebration.

Field of Dreams - DeSoto House Hotel
An Iowa farmer is inspired to build a baseball field on his farm after he hears a voice that tells him, "If you build it, he will come." Once built, the field is visited by the ghosts of Shoeless Joe Jackson and other Chicago Black Sox players who were banned from the game for throwing the 1919 World Series. A nighttime street scene was filmed in Illinois in front of the historic DeSoto House Hotel in Galena, which dates back to 1855 and served as the presidential campaign headquarters for Ulysses S. Grant.

Nauvoo Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
The Nauvoo Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was rebuilt in Nauvoo, one of the early settlements of the Mormon people. The structure is 150 ft tall and overlooks the Mississippi River. The temple was reconstructed on the site of the original, which was built between 1841 and 1846. The temple is a beautiful building and a "must-see" when visiting Nauvoo. The interior is not open to visitors, however gardens on the grounds and stunning exterior architecture bring visitors to the top of the bluffs to see the structure.
Port Galena Riverside Inn Bed and Breakfast
A bed and breakfast called Port Galena Inn, the village's first, opened right on the Illinois River's seawall to take advantage of the expansive river views. It features four rooms, including an executive suite, ranging from $59.90 a night to $200 a night for the suite. Each room has its own deck and lounge chairs and guests can literally hear the water lapping on the seawall. Other available amenities include scented sheets, a private chef upon request, a fireplace, a wine package, fresh cut flowers and free fresh baked cookies. Confederate Cemetery and Memorial
This monument remembers those who died in the infamous Alton prison. A smallpox virus spread rapidly through the Alton Prison in 1863, killing more than 1,435 incarcerated soldiers. The soldiers are laid to rest here and each of their names is commemorated at the Memorial. The Alton Prison and Confederate Cemetery are some of the rare northernmost monuments to the Confederate Soldier.
