Mattoon Welcome Center & Historic Railroad Depot
Mattoon Tourism & Arts Welcome Center is located in the historic Illinois Central Railroad Train Depot, which also still serves as the Amtrak Station for the Community. The original Railroad Depot was constructed in 1918 by the Illinois Central Railroad, and it was then remodeled in 2011. The Depot is still an active Amtrak Station with 3,000 passengers boarding and un-boarding per month. Harvest Frolic Fall Celebration
Celebrate the arrival of autumn with Lincoln Log Cabin’s annual Harvest Frolic on Saturday and Sunday, September 27-28 from 10am to 4pm daily. Mattoon Bagelfest 2014
Bagelfest is a 28 year old festival in Mattoon that began on the idea of hospitality. When the Lender’s Bagel Factory moved to Mattoon, not everyone in town knew about bagels. So Murray Lender introduced his product to the community with a free bagel breakfast held in downtown Mattoon. And then a festival was born. Mattoon Mural Arts at Progress Square
Residents are encouraged to visit the mural, "Civility," and relax in the new surroundings at Progress Square. This mural by artist D.S. Gordon embraces the landscape, history and people of Mattoon. For years after the completion of the rail, many trains a day would meet at the intersection of the tracks at the center of town and determine right of way in polite fashion. This symbolizes the civility of a community with a 150-year history of working together, which the mural captures. One of many mural projects sponsored by the Mattoon Arts Council and the City of Mattoon.

Wolf Creek State Park
Eight miles northwest of Windsor, Wolf Creek State Park encompass 11,100 acres of water, 250 miles of shoreline and large tracts of carefully maintained indigenous woodlands ideal for camping, horseback riding, snowmobiling, boat fishing, water skiing, pontoon boating, windsurfing or just plain bobbing and drifting on the glittering expanse of the lake itself. In addition to visiting the small, friendly wooded campgrounds or taking part in the action on the lake, swimming is available from the beach. You can also take a leisurely stroll through nearby forests. An abundance of deer, pheasant, rabbits, wild turkey and songbirds are almost always visible.
Civil War Saturday: A Question of Loyalty
View a performance of "A Question of Loyalty," an original play about the 1864 Charleston Riot. It remains outside of the draft riots, the bloodiest confrontation on union soil between soldiers and citizens during the Civil War. The original play by Earl Halbe play focuses on a personal story between of the actual participants in the riot. Saturday performances held at Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site Visitor Center Auditorium, 3:00 pm on 6/14 & 7/26.
The Little Theatre on the Square presents “Showcase 2014”
In 2005, USA Today named The Little Theatre as one of the “Top 10 Places to See the Lights Way Off Broadway.” This year The Little Theatre celebrates its 56th year of bringing live performances to the prairie. “Showcase 2014” features performances by the equity actors who will be starring in the 2014 summer season.
A festival of strawberry-related activities and events. This includes special sales promotions throughout the Arthur area. A strawberry social is held in conjunction at the Otto Center south of town. Strawberries are available for purchase and there will be limited giveaways during the festival. Lots of entertainment and activities, including the bands Battle Creek, Gunny Sack Revue and Deep Water.
Arthur Area Freedom Celebration
The event kicks off with a parade followed by a gigantic fireworks display with an exceptional array of shells at Jurgens Park. The 500 ft. long Niagara Falls and the Wall of Fire are some of the crowd favorites. The finale and top crowd favorite is the Rural Patriot on his horse of freedom carrying the American Flag. Activities begin at 4pm and include powered parachute helicopters, WW2 aircraft and skydivers from the Mid-America Parachute Club. Food and drink vendors and handicap parking available.
Sheep to Clothing at Lincoln Log Cabin
Follow the process of creating fabric in the 19th century, beginning with raw wool, our volunteers will take you through the entire spectrum of home based manufacturing process; quite literally from sheep to clothing. The Lincoln-Sargent Farm Foundation will kick off their fundraising campaign for the restoration of the Moore Home, scene of Abraham Lincoln’s family farewell before leaving for Washington DC in 1861, with a unique pledge drive. The site manager will be weaving Venetian Carpet throughout the day with pledges for the number of yards woven. Also enjoy the Victory Garden Plant Sale: the Lincoln-Sargent Farm Foundation will again be selling heirloom flowers, plants and herbs to raise funds to support the educational and interpretive programming at Lincoln Log Cabin. All events will run from 10am-4pm.
