Starved Rock Walkers Club
Join the fun on our weekly, guided hikes! Explore Starved Rock State Park, Matthiessen State Park, the I & M Canal and a nearby Nature Preserve. Every Thursday morning, year round, the Starved Rock Walkers Club meets in the lobby of the Lodge and departs at 9:00 am. Hikes last between 2 and 3 hours, depending on the destination. The hikes vary each week and over a 4-month period, the group will see the entire park. Make some new friends and learn about wildlife, wildflowers and more. This event is free and open to the public. Please note: We will not hike on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve. Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Every Thursday (year round).

The second annual CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) On-The-Air weekend will be held August 8th and 9th from 9:00a.m.-5:00p.m. both days. The Starved Rock Radio Club will be hosting this event at the West Shelter by the Lodge. Starved Rock State Park had 3 camps; 614, 1609 and the 2601. The call sign will be W9MKS. You will be able to talk all over the United States with other Radio Clubs about the CCC's. Stop by anytime during the hours listed (or use the radio). For information call 815-220-7386.
Amboy Wildlife Marsh Wildlife Santuary Tour - Diverse Habitats
Join the Illinois Audubon Society to enjoy a day at Amboy Wildlife Marsh & Sanctuary. Cost is $10 which includes snacks & water and an optional lunch can be purchased for $6. Learn about the unique habitats that make this sanctuary an absolute jewel which includes wetlands, black oak savannas, sedge meadows and dry sand prairies. Dinner and a Little History: Gurdon Saltonstall Hubbard The Swiftwalker
Hubbard was 18 when he arrived in Chicago in October of 1818 as a clerk working in the fur trade. After the fur trade ended in Illinois, Hubbard built the first brick commercial building, opened the first meat packing plant in Chicago, helped create the Chicago Board of Trade and the Union Stockyards. He campaigned for and was later appointed as a commissioner responsible for building the I&M Canal. In his long and active life, Gurdon Hubbard saw Chicago grow from a town of four and a half houses, a fort and a Potawatomi town, to more than a half million people by the time of his death in 1886. Speaker: Gary Mechanic, veteran tour guide and storyteller for Friends of the Chicago Portage will bring his story to life.
