Our mission is to preserve and celebrate Peoria's story. We own two historic house museums and provide certified guides for the History Trolley and other tours. The focus has changed and evolved through the years, but our commitment to preservation remains strong. programs are offered for both local residents and out-of-town visitors. We seek to entertain the eye and stimulate the mind as well as support historical scholarship and collaborate with other preservation organizations. We look to the future with a vision to be the resource and advocate for historical preservation and research on the Peoria area, its organizations and its people. As a collaborative partner of the Peoria Riverfront Museum, we are pleased to have the opportunity to display some of the Society's artifacts and present the history of the Peoria area in the museum.

Stone Mill Museum
Built in 1856, the Stone Mill was originally used to produce flour. In 1965, the building was deeded to the Sandwich Historical Society. The building itself is a museum exhibit which includes the original beams and support posts made of 125 year old timber. The historical society first opened the museum to the public in 1969 and now includes three floors of exhibits. Among the exhibits are fire fighting equipment, antique car, furniture, signage, photos and many other items from the area's past. The museum is open every Sunday, 1-4pm during warm months (April to October).

Metamora Court House Museum
The Metamora Courthouse was built in 1845 and served as the center of county government until the county seat was moved to Eureka in 1896. It is one of two surviving courthouses on the historic Eighth Judicial Circuit traveled by Abraham Lincoln. In 1978 the Courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The first floor of the two-story brick structure contains a central hall flanked by two exhibit rooms, one displaying artifacts of early local history, the other with exhibits describing the 1850s court system and Lincoln's life on the Eighth Judicial Circuit. On the second floor, the former courtroom and two small chambers are furnished to represent the era during which Lincoln practiced law.

The Art of Green
The Art of Green is a cooperative outdoor show with the John Deere Historic Site, The Next Picture Show Gallery and Sauk Valley Bank and will be held on the street along 1st Ave in downtown Dixon. Along with art work by regional artists there will be a variety of John Deere tractors and equipment on display.

Elkhart Wildflower Nature Walks
Enjoy the spectacular wildflowers on Elkhart Hill. Everyone will receive a wildflower "bingo" card to learn the names of the flowers and keep track of the beautiful flowers they will see. Walks are limited to 15 people and will last approximately 90 minutes. The outing will be on foot. Mighty Richland Players Dessert Theater "Opal's Million Dollar Duck"
While rooting through Opal's Antique Junque Shop, two summer stock leads come across a painting that looks a lot like an old master that disappeared from the local art museum. In order to collect the insurance themselves, the divas, Desmond and Queenie, try to acquire the painting from Opal, who has other plans for the painting. The plot thickens hilariously when the two stars resort to everything from outrageous flattery to knockout drops trying to get their hands on the picture. Annual Bluegrass Jam
It’s bluegrass time again at the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site, with both fans and performers gathering on Sunday, Aug. 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Musicians from Illinois and Indiana will converge at the site for a day of jamming with informal groups playing along the creek throughout the day. The site’s volunteers will be serving hamburgers, hotdogs and more with proceeds benefit the historical and interpretive programs at the site. Anyone with a love of this unique style of music is welcome to join one of the many the groups playing in the park.

Join us for a torchlight hike around the historic site then return to the Visitor Center for a Barn Dance and weenie roast. Lincoln Log Cabin is the last home of Thomas and Sarah Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln's parents. It shares the site with the Sargent farm, an 1840's living history farm.
2014 Wright Ride
The Oak Park Cycle Club, The Oak Park Regional Housing Center and Visit Oak Park invite you to the Wright Ride 2014. One of the best ways to discover the delights of Chicago's near western suburbs is on two wheels. A family-friendly event, the Wright Ride is not a race-but a leisurely jaunt through some of Chicagoland's most beautiful tree-lined and architecturally rich communities. Cyclists of all abilities are welcome: whether you're a novice, casual cyclist, or experienced long-distance rider, there's something here for everyone. A plus is that cycling is an eco-friendly way to tour the wealth of historically significant homes and structures throughout the area. With a choice of 10, 30, 50 and 62-mile routes, riders will be able to take in the scenery and charm of as many as 10 communities, including Oak Park, River Forest, Riverside, and Western Springs. More than 25 intriguing landmarks - including a dozen designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. All routes begin and end on the newly renovated Marion Street in Downtown Oak Park - giving participants the opportunity to take advantage of the wide-range of dining experiences and specialty shops that set Oak Park apart!
