Chicago Architecture Biennial
The inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial, titled The State of the Art of Architecture, will take stock of the extraordinary ways in which architects, artists, designers, planners, activists, and policy makers from around the world are tackling the most pressing issues of today. By shining a light on realized architectural projects, projects in formation, spatial experiments made visible, and public gatherings, the Biennial seeks to generate thinking about architecture and its implications for our times. It explores how creativity and imagination can radically transform lived experience as we negotiate urban, suburban, and rural contexts, as well as other places that have not yet been anticipated. Through a constellation of exhibitions, full-scale installations, and programs of events, the Biennial invites the public to engage with and think about architecture in new and unexpected ways, and to take part in a global discussion about the future of the built environment. Biennial Exhibition Tours
Tours of the Chicago Architecture Biennial exhibition will be held daily at 10:00am. Tours will meet in the lobby near the Washington St. entrance. Please RSVP for the daily tour. No tours on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day New Year's Eve, or New Year's Day.
Water Tower Gallery
A Biennial exhibition will be presented by the City Gallery, located in the Historic Water Tower, a familiar and treasured landmark located along the city’s famed Magnificent Mile. Constructed between 1867 and 1869, the tower was created for Chicago’s municipal water system, and originally housed a 135-foot iron standpipe used to regulate water pressure. It gained special significance as one of the few buildings to survive the destructive path of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The City Gallery regularly presents art and photography exhibitions.
The Graham Foundation, one of the Biennial’s presenting partners, will participate by hosting an exhibition and public programs at the Madlener House, a Prairie-style mansion located in the historic Gold Coast neighborhood, where the Graham Foundation is located. Founded in 1956, the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts makes project-based grants to individuals and organizations and produces public programs to foster the development and exchange of diverse and challenging ideas about architecture and its role in the arts, culture, and society. Opening Times: Wednesday - Saturday 11:00am - 6:00pm
Chicago Interiors explores extraordinary interior spaces in Chicago presented through notes, models, and material boards from designers responsible for them. As a city that famously rose from the ashes of the Great Chicago Fire, Chicago literally rebuilt itself as an international center for commerce and trade, as well as a burgeoning cultural epicenter. Since the fire, Chicago has retained the old and intermingled it with the new. Like the buildings in this city, interiors have shifted with the times -- from the dust of commerce, slaughterhouses, and industry, buildings were reborn and repurposed time and again as both public and private spaces with new buildings abutting and intermingling with the old. Chicago Interiors showcases new and the re-envisioned.

The exhibition and related programs shift the gaze from design product to design process, giving audiences and visitors the opportunity to examine how Arts + Public Life uses its spaces, programs and other resources, as well as its unique partnerships with local artists, designers, students, youth, business owners to enhance the built environment, cultural landscape and livability of Washington Park. The exhibition will include projects by Carlos Rolón/Dzine, PORT Urbanism, Mikel Patrick Avery, as well as the leading architects’ visions for the Green Line Art Center, a future arts space on Garfield Boulevard.

Designed by Louis Sullivan of the firm Adler & Sullivan (1891–1982), the Charnley-Persky House is one of the few extant buildings that displays the combined talents of Louis Sullivan and his then-draftsman, Frank Lloyd Wright. The Charnley-Persky House is recognized as a seminal house in the development of modern residential design as well as a keystone in the architectural philosophies of Sullivan and Wright. These tours further SAH’s mission by promoting meaningful public engagement with the history of the built environment.

Filbert's Old Time Root Beer
During the early 1900's, George Filbert, his wife and their young son, Charlie, could be seen on a horse-drawn wagon in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood delivering bottles of milk to stores and homes. It wasn't until the height of prohibition that Filbert's began making Root Beer. Now 85 years later, Ron Filbert, the fourth generation Filbert, continues to make his families famous Root Beer in the same Bridgeport neighborhood where his Great-Grandfather started it all back in 1926.
It’s not just a bike shop, and it’s not just a coffee shop—it’s an artistic space, a working space, a space to live in. We encourage everyone to bring suggestions and feedback; to bring their kids, or their laptops, or both; and to make new friends by elbowing into the community table. Everything we do is centered around this sense of community, right down to our manufacturing. Heritage bikes are designed, welded (by hand, out of American steel), and assembled right here in the city of Chicago. Plus, almost every bike is entirely unique, as Heritage focuses on full customization. Whether it’s sparkly colors or Italian leather accessories that float your boat, we’ll find something to match your style.
