The Museum is decked out for the holidays; the trees have twinkle lights, Sam is dressed up, and of course the tree competition! During the month of December the Museum gets dressed up for the holidays. The Festival of Trees features a display of over 20 trees decorated by businesses and non-profit groups.The public can vote for their favorite tree by making a donation in jars in the lobby. The Midwest Museum of Natural History also has ‘special events’ happening weekly all December long!
The Quad Cities Grand Parade travels through downtown Rock Island, Illinois, and features bands, Irish dancers, floats, groups and family clans. The annual parade, organized by the St. Patrick Society of the Quad Cities, starts at 11:30 a.m.
To celebrate the return of our National bird, the great Bald Eagle, the public is invited to the free activities at the civic center, Black Fox Singers, Native American dancers, vendors, food, live raptors and an eagle watch, held from 10-5pm both days.
The centerpiece of Clayville is the Broadwell Inn, the oldest brick building in Sangamon County, built in 1824 by the Broadwell family as a stage coach stop between Springfield and Beardstown. The Inn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is surrounded by numerous other historic buildings from Central Illinois moved to Clayville in the 1960s to recreate an early frontier pioneer village. Come see a unique piece of Illinois history.

As is tradition, the museum's 45-foot Grand Tree takes center stage in the Rotunda decked out in 30,000 lights. It takes on a different theme each year so expect giant gears to be part of the decor to match the special MSI exhibit, Robot Revolution. Surrounding it will be more than 50 smaller trees beautifully decorated by volunteers from Chicago communities to represent their various cultures and holiday traditions. Shakespeare 400 Chicago is a yearlong international arts festival in 2016 celebrating the vibrancy, relevance and reach of Shakespeare. As the world commemorates the four hundred years since Shakespeare’s death in 1616, Shakespeare 400 Chicago will engage more than 500,000 Chicagoans and visitors to our City through 850 events.
One of Andersonville’s many traditional Swedish events, St. Lucia begins with a torch-lit procession down the sidewalks of Clark Street at 4:45 p.m., kicking off at the Swedish American Museum, 5211 N. Clark St. The procession highlight is the appearance of the specially chosen “Lucia Girls,” who will lead the crowd, wearing long white robes and beautiful crowns of candles and singing “The Lucia Song.” Children and adults are welcome to join in the procession. Afterwards, all participants are invited to the Lucia celebration at the Swedish American Museum. The Lucia celebration features a telling of the Lucia legend, family entertainment by Dream Big Performing Arts, and Swedish holiday treats including traditional “pepparkakor” ginger snaps. Admission is $1 or can of food to benefit Care for Real, Edgewater’s food pantry.
The holiday festivities in Bishop Hill begin with Julmarknad, or Christmas Market. This event is based on Scandinavian customs dating back to the Middle Ages when farmers and artisans would gather in the village squares to sell their wares. Bishop Hill businesses will be offering unique gifts, handmade wares, antiques, quilts, collectibles, baked goods, delicious foods, and Swedish imports. Businesses will be open from 10-5pm. Scandinavian foods such as herring, lutfisk, and rye bread are also in abundance. Select from a large array of delicious holiday cookies, homemade by community bakers on Friday and Saturday.
Music and fun for the entire family, participate in musical workshops, jamming sessions and a barn dance with instructions provided. Main stage concerts are held in Village Park. Main Stage events begin at 11 am, Maypole procession at 4 pm, and Barn Dance at 7 pm.
