Underground Railroad Shuttle Tours
Learn about local, Underground Railroad sites on a shuttle tour with J.E. Robinson Tours and the Alton Regional CVB on the last Saturday of each month (10 a.m. to noon). The two-hour guided shuttle tours will stop at some of the sites that were part of the Underground Railroad system including the Old Rock House, Rocky Fork Church and more. Alton’s riverfront location along the Mighty Mississippi played a vital role in helping slaves make connections to the freedom of the northern states. Buried beneath the streets of Alton and Godfrey, remnants of this period in history still exist.

Paul Busse, designer of the Model Railroad Garden, created this amazing exhibition exclusively for the Garden's holiday celebration.

The 7,500-square-foot “Model Railroad Garden: Landmarks of America” exhibition at the Chicago Botanic Garden features trains running on 1,600 feet of track, for train and garden enthusiasts to enjoy the delightful sights and sounds of the miniature trains traversing high and low through tunnels, across bridges and around buildings.

You'll see grand illusions, levitating women, appearances and vanishes, escapes, comedy magic, sleight of hand and beautiful dancers...everything you could possibly imagine and performances that you never dreamed possible – all rolled up into a live show.
During this fun-filled event for all ages at the Wildlife Discovery Museum, meet live crocodilians, including Bubba the world famous American Alligator who will be on hand until 2pm. The expert staff and members of the Chicago Herpetological Society and the Madison Area Herpetological Society will give short talks about crocodiles and their kin, including some of our very own residents while also providing some close up encounters with a variety of reptiles. There will also be here will also be kid-friendly activities, face painting, a story teller, craft vendors, food and refreshments.

Art on Harrison
Seeking a way to announce the emerging Arts District, galleries and building owners in partnership with the Oak Park Arts Council inaugurated Art on Harrison in 1995. Conceived of as an informal Friday evening gallery walk, the event has continued each September since its inception, expanding to include entertainment and performances at participating galleries. Come out and see what the area has to offer in a convivial atmosphere, a celebration of what the creative spirits of this community have accomplished.

American Thresherman Fall Festival
This event will have daily demonstrations and displays of steam and gas engines, draft horses and pony activities, robe making, saw mill, corn shredding and shelling, cider and apple butter making, blacksmithing, steam train rides and much more. This is a family fun weekend!
Nicholas Conservatory - Lorikeet Exhibit
For the second year, lorikeets are landing in Rockford! These bright, colorful birds will swoop in for a stay at Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens. Inside the Conservatory, guests will find a special lorikeet house which provides guests with an intimate look into the fascinating world of the lorikeet. Visitors will be "face to beak" with the small- to medium-sized parrots known for their playful personalities, vibrant coloration, and their ability to mimic words and sounds. Lorikeets are a group of birds classified under "true parrots," and are found throughout the Australian region. Lorikeets, or lorys, have a unique brush-tipped tongue for feeding on fruits, vegetables, and flowers and are constantly looking for nectar and fruits due to their rapid metabolism. Guests will be able to purchase a nectar cup for $1 at the front desk and gift shop inside the Conservatory.
All Aglow Holiday Display - Nicholas Conservatory
Celebrate the holidays at Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens. Come see sparkling holiday lights and beautiful floral displays inside the warm tropical conservatory. Outdoor grounds are also decorated for the season. On Saturdays and Sundays, Trolley Car 36 transforms into the All Aglow Express! Your ride will take you north along the Rock River to the magical North Pole, where you will be greeted by Santa's elves, make gooey s'mores, and drink some warm hot coca. While at the North Pole, you will hear the story of "The Polar Express" by Chris Van Allsburg, and receive "the first gift of Christmas" from Santa himself. Dress warmly, the Trolley is an open-air ride.
A Sandwich Christmas / Festival of Trees
Christmas fun begins in Sandwich! On Saturday, tour Sandwich with the Sandwich Association of Merchants “Tour of Homes.” Stop by the Festival of Trees at Timber Creek Inn & Suites and experience the magic of a holiday wonderland filled with an assortment of delightfully and uniquely decorated trees. Holiday musical entertainment is scheduled at various times throughout this free festival. Be sure to visit the Holiday Lane Craft Show and Home Business Showcase located in the convention center for a perfect holiday shopping opportunity. Also on Saturday, Secret Santa Shopping fun will be at the Sandwich Opera House. The Sandwich Old Mill Museum will be open to the public. Begin an evening of delight with the Tree Lighting Ceremony at Veterans Park and Railroad Streets. Enjoy a real carriage ride from Veterans Park. Take the trolley tour and participate in the decorating contest.
