MORTON ARBORETUMLocated 25 miles west of Chicago, the Morton Arboretum is home to 1,700 acres of spectacular gardens, world-renowned plant collections and unique natural areas that can be viewed by car, on foot or via the open-air Acorn Express tram. Stop at the Visitor Center, where you can get tour information, grab a bite to eat or pick up a souvenir.

CHICAGO BOTANIC GARDENThe Chicago Botanic Garden showcases 26 unique gardens that range from the romantic English Walled Garden to the wild Midwestern Prairie. FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT HOME AND STUDIO

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT HOME AND STUDIOThis mecca for architecture buffs served as Wright's private residence and studio during the first 20 years of his career. Wright used his home as an architectural laboratory, trying out design concepts before sharing them with clients. The site has been restored to appear as it did in 1909, the last year Wright lived and worked here. Spend some time indoors, then tour the 25 Wright buildings in the surrounding Oak Park neighborhood.

LONG GROVE HISTORIC DISTRICTEnter through the old covered bridge and be swept back in time when you visit historic Long Grove. Dating back to the early 1800s, the village features more than 80 shops and restaurants housed in preserved historic buildings. Popular year round special events include the Chocolate Festival and Strawberry Fest.

Outlet shopping is the name of the game at Gurnee Mills, home to more than 200 manufacturer and retail outlet stores. Some of the names to drop include OFF 5TH Saks Fifth Avenue, Gap and Liz Claiborne. On-site entertainment venues include the Gurnee Marcus Cinema, Rink Side Sports and Serpent Safari Reptile Zoo. GENESEE THEATRE

GENESEE THEATREThe historic Genesee Theatre in downtown Waukegan recently underwent a $24 million renovation that has restored the theater to its original splendor. Perhaps the most striking addition is the 18-foot-tall Baccarat crystal chandelier that graces the lobby. The Genesee plays host to touring Broadway shows, along with headliner comedians and musical acts.
