Chicago Model City

How does a city as vast and complex as Chicago take shape? What are the consequences—intended and unintended—of urban planning? What challenges do planners face? Beyond its reputation as a global metropolis featuring world-renowned architecture, Chicago enjoys special status: it is a model for understanding all cities. Enormous size, diverse population, booming industry, and complex infrastructure have made Chicago emblematic of modern life. Urban planners, sociologists, and historians have studied Chicago more than any other American city. Several planning events stand out as having made Chicago a model city. These include Daniel Burnham’s Plan of Chicago (1909), Ernest Burgess and Robert Park’s map of economic and social divisions (1925), and the beginnings of urban renewal (1940s). Alongside these classic examples, Chicago Model City analyzes today’s planning efforts and highlights issues such as density and the conservation of natural resources.
