Doors Open: St. John's Lutheran Church

Founded in 1816, St. John's is the oldest active Lutheran Church in Illinois. Founded by German families who moved to Union County from North Carolina.

The church members originally met in homes and/or barns, until they were able to build the first church. The present structure dates to the 1850s. The earliest grave in the cemetery is dated 1824. A sign was recently dedicated to honor four Revolutionary War Soldiers buried in the cemetery. Hosts/Hostesses will give you insight to early life in Southernmost Illinois.
