Join in on a historically accurate, educational, and interactive recreation of election day.
It is November 3, 1868, and some of the best living historians in the Midwest will act as docents and interpret to the public, the election day as it unfolds in Galena. Walking tours will be given from the DeSoto House Hotel where voting will take place, to the Washburne House where Grant and many of his supporters are awaiting election returns. From there, follow Grant up to his home. Activities will include people from all walks of life in the city of Galena in 1868. Some will support Grant, and there may be some supporters of his opponent as well. This is a one time event to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Grant's election to the office of president. Visitors will be encouraged to vote and interact with the interpreters as well.
