Things to do near Harrisburg

Harrisburg gives you everything you might need before you head into the Southern Illinois wilderness.

You'll find hot coffee at dawn, gear for the trails, pizza after sunset, and, of course, a warm welcome and hearty encouragement.

Within 30 minutes, you can be standing on standstone cliffs that took millions of years to arrive, swimming in forest pools, or riding horses through wooded gaps. Or you could still be relaxing in a local diner. It's your call, and the town moves at an easy pace. Whatever adventure you choose, it starts here.

Your Shawnee adventure begins here

For most people, Harrisburg is the launchpad into Shawnee's best spots. Garden of the Gods waits only 30 minutes away, and by staying in Harrisburg, you're put in a prime position to photograph them at sunrise or sunset.

Back in town, you can walk or bike the Rail Trail, explore pioneer cabins at Saline Creek Village, or let the kids play at the city park.

Where to Eat and Drink in Harrisburg

Filling and fulfilling

Comfort food is what they do best here, and it's the kind of thing that hits just right after you've been on the trail. Mackie's Pizza is famous for its thin-crust pizza, and Morello's Restaurant brings steak, seafood, and slightly more elegant fare. There's also good BBQ and Mexican, with satisfying, hearty, and honest portions on offer wherever you turn.
