Specific Climbing Areas
Climbing is only allowed in two places in the park.
Shelter 1 Bluff Area: This spot features a variety of climbing styles, including sport and traditional routes, with options for all skill levels. You'll also find classic bouldering challenges and well-known climbs like “Makanda Layback” and “Shake and Bake Direct.”
Devils Standtable Area: Best known for its bouldering scene, this area features a diverse range of routes and a boulder field. Highlights include local favorites like “Black Hole Theory” and “Sloper Slapper.”

Leave No Trace Practices
All climbers must follow the park's Leave No Trace practices:
- Stay on trails
- Minimize impact on vegetation, climb around it
- Look for durable surfaces to stage on such as rock or gravel
- Clean up tick marks
- Use a chalk ball or keep bag closed to avoid spills, clean up if they occur
- Never chip holds
- Pack out trash you find
- Avoid removing loose rock unless it is for safety reasons
- Avoid tying your rope directly to a tree. Use a sling instead.
- Where possible, use fixed bolts, such as at Shelter one.
- Please do not disturb wildlife, the bluffs are home to many animals such as bats, birds and snakes.

Specific Climbing Areas
Rock climbing is allowed at Mississippi Palisades State Park, but only in designated areas to protect both climbers and the natural environment. Approved climbing zones include the Sentinel Area, Twin Sisters, and Indian Head — each offering unique routes on the park’s striking limestone formations. Please note that the south tower of Sentinel Rock is closed to climbing.

Safety Information
Climbers at Mississippi Palisades State Park should take special care when planning their ascent. Permanent anchors are not permitted anywhere in the park, and all climbers must bring and use their own removable protection. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources does not maintain the park’s cliffs, rocks, or natural features, and assumes no responsibility for climber safety. Always inspect routes carefully, climb within your ability, and never rely on fixed gear. As with all outdoor climbing, wearing a helmet and using proper safety equipment is strongly recommended.
