Amboy Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary
The Amboy Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary is 272 acre of wetlands offering a rare and fragile ecosystem, which includes endangered turtles, many birds and unique plant life. It is located near the intersection of U.S. Route 52 and Mormon Road about 3 miles south of Amboy. Open to the public 7 days a week for walking and bird-watching. No dogs are allowed due to sensitive plant and wildlife.
Amboy Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary Tour - Mastodons to the Present
The Illinois Audubon Society is sponsoring a day at the Amboy Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary on May 23rd which will cover Botany of today, megafauna of the past and a look into Amboy’s future. Tour runs from 8:30am-2pm; cost is $10 & includes snacks and water and optional lunch can be purchased for $6. We will explore the botany of the sanctuary, a seep area and several focal points of ongoing restoration with William Handel, botanist and plant ecologist, SIU. Dr. Daniel Gebo, a anthropologist/primatologist will conduct a journey into this area’s past when mastodons and stag moose roamed Amboy Marsh.
