Campbell’s Island, near present-day Rock Island, was the site of a key 1814 War of 1812 battle, where Sauk warriors led by Black Hawk defeated U.S. troops under Lt. John Campbell. The Campbell’s Island State Memorial, dedicated in 1908, features a granite monument with a bronze battle scene plaque. Surrounding it is a peace garden, added in 1998, featuring benches in a Sacred Circle with mosaic designs honoring Sauk and Mesquakie traditions.
