This year's Romance concert has been designed in honor of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra’s 125th Season by our soloist, acrobatic violinist Janice Martin: romantic music from the Romantic Era!
Ms. Martin opens with a virtuoso solo violin work by Ysaÿe and then joins the orchestra in a work by Tchaikovsky written for one of his romantic partners. Tchaikovsky’s famous Romeo and Juliet is his musical tribute to Shakespeare’s famous “star-crossed lovers.” In Scheherazade, Ms. Martin takes the role of a princess, whose inventive storytelling postpones her death, and eventually wins the heart of the stern sultan. After a brilliant, Spanish-flavored showpiece by Saint-Saëns, we close with excerpts from Stravinsky’s ballet The Firebird, based upon a Russian fairytale.
