Discover the Story of Rosemont! When no community would take them in, the homeowners decided to go it alone, and on January 20, 1956 the Village of Rosemont was born.
When people hear "Rosemont," they might say, “Oh yeah, I’ve been to a concert there,” or “That’s where the rose water tower is!” Almost everyone has heard of Rosemont, but many assume it has no real history or that no one actually lives there—that it’s just a hub for entertainment venues and restaurants next to the airport.
Our goal is to change that perception. Rosemont has a rich history. This town rose from swamp land and transformed into one of Illinois’ busiest tourist destinations and a major economic driver for the state.
It’s a true “do-it-yourself” town. Nearby communities didn’t want to incorporate the people who lived here, dismissing the area as having little value. But the resilient individuals who settled in these so-called “sticks” sought a better life. Through hard work, bold ideas, and a deep love for family, they built Rosemont from the ground up. Over the past 70 years, it has grown into a thriving community and a premier destination for concerts, meetings, and trade shows.
One person had the vision, determination, and courage to make it all happen—Don Stephens. His leadership laid the foundation for Rosemont’s success, and his dream continues to shape the town into the vibrant place it is today.
The Donald E. Stephens History Museum exists to showcase that story—to prove that Rosemont is more than just a place you pass by on the highway. Its history runs deeper than people realize. It’s a tight-knit community built on perseverance and pride.
The museum also aims to instill a sense of pride in Rosemont’s residents, inspiring them with the stories of risk-takers, hard workers, and dedicated individuals who helped build and sustain this remarkable town!
