Chicago Aerial Tours

Take a skyline tour on a small plane or helicopter (max three people, take off and land at a private terminal at Midway, 63rd and Laramie Ave.). The entire trip is 20 to 30 minutes from engine on to off.

(90 minutes, Chicago’s First Lady, 112 E. Wacker Dr.) Trained and enthusiastic volunteer docents share stories about the city’s architectural styles and the legendary figures who designed the buildings while cruising the Chicago River. The full-service boat has an open-air upper deck and is climate controlled below. A snack bar and restrooms are on board.

Shoreline Sightseeing Architecture River Tour

(60 minutes, departs from 401 N. Michigan Ave. and Navy Pier) See more than 40 landmarks, such as the Tribune Tower, Marina City and the Wrigley Building, aboard boats from this company that’s been in business since 1939.

  • Chicago River Boat Architecture Tours (90 minutes, depart from 465 N. McClurg Ct.)  On-board docents chat about bridges and skyscrapers, just some of the 50 landmarks you’ll see. 
  • Seadog River and Lake Architecture (75 minutes, depart from Navy Pier) This narrated cruise starts in the lake and includes a short speedboat ride on your way to Willis Tower. The boat is BYOB and dog-friendly.
  • Wendella Tours and Cruises (45 or 90 minutes, depart from the Wrigley Building, 400 N. Michigan Ave.) Tours and cruises include the Chicago River and Lake Michigan aboard a full-service, climate-controlled boat with a snack bar and restrooms. This family-owned and -operated company operates year-round.

Mercury Cruises

Canine Cruises (11:15 every Saturday and Sunday, mid-July to mid-October, depart Chicago Riverwalk, 112 E. Wacker Dr.) See the sites with your leashed dogs aboard this narrated river and lake cruise; dog water bowls are available, plus dog-friendly maps of the neighborhood. 

Chicago by Night! Cruise (90 minutes, depart Chicago Riverwalk, 112 E. Wacker Dr.) This narrated cruise plies the river and lake as the sun dips below the horizon. Bar beverages and snacks are available for purchase.

Chicago Sunset Cruise

(90 minutes, depart from the Wrigley Building, 400 N. Michigan Ave.) The tour emphasis is on the sunset and the sites with minimal narration. Guests enjoy a full-service, climate-controlled boat with a snack bar and restrooms on board.

  • Chicago Architecture Center, Evening River Cruise (90 minutes, Chicago’s First Lady, depart 112 E. Wacker Dr.) Cruise with trained and enthusiastic volunteer docents on board.
  • Seadog Extreme Thrill Ride (30 minutes, depart from Navy Pier) Sharp twists and turns guarantee passengers (48 inches and taller) will get wet while reaching speeds up to 45 mph.
  • Seadog Lakefront Speedboat Tour (30 minutes, depart Navy Pier) Facts are interspersed with bursts of speed on this BYOB, dog-friendly tour.
  • Shoreline Sightseeing, Skyline Lake Cruise (30 minutes, depart Navy Pier) This prerecorded tour cruises past the skyline, where passengers see some of the city’s tallest buildings, such as the Willis Tower, Aqua Tower and The St. Regis Chicago, while hearing the history.

Urban Kayak

(Two hours, riverfront location, 435 E. Riverwalk and Lakefront location, 110 Lake Shore Dr.) Choose from multiple tours: DIY, Historic Chicago (guides on river), Sunset (landmarks and historic buildings). Plan on getting wet. Twilight and Sunset tours (1 hour; depart Monroe Harbor). Select single or tandem kayaks or stand-up paddleboards. Participants must be 18 and over to paddle alone or be accompanied by an adult.

Chicago Water Taxi

(Multiple locations: Ogilvie/Union (West Loop), Michigan Ave. and Chinatown) Owned and operated by Wendella, the water taxi connects several neighborhoods. Pop off to see the sites, shop and dine. Bring your luggage and bike; restrooms and beverages on board.

  • Chicago Boat Company (One to four hours, multiple departure locations: Marina City, 300 N. State St.; City Winery, 11 W. Riverwalk S.; Chicago Water Plaza, 151-155 W. Wacker Dr.; North Branch 3057 N. Rockwell St.; Lakefront, 400 E. Monroe) Be the captain of a Duffy electric boat as you navigate the river moving between 3 to 6 mph. Captains and tour guides cost extra. 
  • Island Party Boat (90 minutes, depart Chicago Riverwalk, 355 E. Riverwalk South) Come board the tiki-themed river boat and tour the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. The boats are pet-friendly. There is a bar on board, but no guide.

(60 to 180 minutes, 111 E. Wacker Dr.) Volunteer docents lead 70 walking tours. Essential tours depart from the CAC; premier and neighborhood tours depart from various locations across the city.

Tours by Foot, Riverwalk and History Tour

(10 a.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 1 mile of walking. Start at the Renaissance Chicago Downtown Hotel, 1 W. Upper Wacker Dr., end at the Apple Store near the Nicholas J. Melas Centennial Fountain) The tour begins with Chicago’s earliest settlers and moves through historical sites and events, including the Chicago Fire, Fort Dearborn and significant architectural buildings.

  • Inside Chicago Walking Tours (Two hours, with 1.25 to 1.75 miles of walking, multiple tours: The World Within, tour the interior of Chicago Loop buildings, start near the Chicago Board of Trade, end three blocks away from Millennium Park (exact address sent with ticket purchase); Open Your Eyes, tour the pedway, a labyrinth of underground tunnels and corridors. Note: this tour includes several sets of stairs. Start near City Hall on LaSalle St. and end within a block of Millennium Park (exact address sent with ticket purchase).
  • Wild Onion Walks (Multiple tours: Chicago Loop, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Saturday, 2 hours, start at the bronze cow outside of the Chicago Cultural Center, Washington St. and Michigan Ave.; Let’s Go to the Parks, 2 p.m. Monday, 2.5 hours, start at the big boulder next to Agora, 1135 S. Michigan Ave.; Strolling Around the Chicago River, 11 a.m. Wednesday and Saturday, 2 hours, start Anita Dee Yacht Charters, 200 N. State St.) The Loop tour included six stops for tastes of iconic foods like popcorn, a Chicago-style hot dog, Italian beef, deep-dish pizza and the signature brownie from the Palmer House hotel.

River North Historic Pubs (4 p.m., Thursday, 3.5 hours, 1.1 miles, starts at Marquette Building, 140 S. Dearborn St.). This Brown Line tour covers two neighborhoods and four taverns. Loop Tour: Home of the Modern Skyscraper (10 a.m., Monday, 3.5 hours, 1.5 miles, starts at Fine Arts Building, 410 S. Michigan Ave.). This Orange Line tour visits landmarks like the Harold Washington Library and The Rookery. Other tours: Prairie Avenue District, Street of the Elite, and Pilsen: Creativity & Community.

American Ghost Walks

(Multiple tours starting at Congress Plaza Hotel, 520 S. Michigan Ave.) The Devil in the White City Bus Tour: Delve into the life and landmarks of HH Holmes, a notorious serial killer (3 hours, 2 p.m. on select Saturdays).
